Lantern Sending Festival

The Event Details as Relevant to Characters
Dates: December 17th-25th
Where: Sunagakure

Every year, Suna takes this week and turns it into a time to honor those they've lost over the course of the year. It's one of the only times during the year, Exams excluded, that Suna really welcomes people from outside the village, feeling that anyone is welcome to revere the dead, so long as they're respectful about it.

Every evening will see people sending lit lanterns out of the village, many of which will have letters to the dead. During the day beforehand, there is usually a rather vibrant festival air, where local treats can be gotten and games can be played. All of these close up after dark so as not to disgrace those doing a sending except for the food sellers, and it's not unheard of that child toys can be found in excess during this time as well.

The History Behind the Holiday
The holiday has rather interesting beginnings, as once upon a time it was just a local tradition to send up lanterns at funerals, with no big fanfare otherwise being given. Now, this holiday has taken on a day and a purpose, after the story of the man who lost everyone, and was given them back by the lady of reincarnation. Due to this, it's not unheard of that children are conceived during this holiday under the belief that they might be revived loved ones.

The Story
The story begins with a man, whose name is long forgotten, who had lost everyone to war and sickness. His three children, a son and two daughters, his wife, his brother, his nephew, and even his parents were all lost to him, leaving him with nothing but grief and sadness. It was a terrible year, and he did not know how he could recover from the last of his losses, his four-year-old daughter, the youngest of the children and the longest to survive. He strongly considered joining them.

Instead, he wrote a letter, spilling out his grief and sadness, detailing how much he missed them to every loved one lost in that year and the year before. He knew no one on this plane could read the words he wrote, but that did not mean that they might not reach the next. Thus, that day, when he would have sent up a paper lantern for his daughter's memory, he made it from that long, heart-rending letter, and sent that instead.

What he did not expect was for a woman to come to him later that night, wiping his tears and saying nothing at all, who took him into her arms and comforted away his sorrows. By morning she was gone, leaving only the memory of warmth behind. He thought he dreamed her, in his pain, and thought nothing more of it until she came to him, a child in her arms, and smiled a beautiful smile at him as she handed him the child. A boy, one who looked exactly as his dead son. When he looked up she was gone, leaving the child with him, and no matter how he searched, no one had heard of her.

Thus, on the same week as the year before, he sent up another lantern, and he was joyous that she came to him, staying with him until morning as his son slept in his bassinet nearby.

Just as the year before, she returned to him again later in the year, giving him a child. He did not recognize this one at first, for he had not known his dead wife as a child, but when he went digging through pictures he held of his family, that informed him of who his little girl was. Of course, the woman did not stay any more than she had the year before, and he, being too busy with two small children, could not search.

Instead, he focused, sending up no lanterns that year, save one in the spring for a neighbor which did nothing at all.

It was only when he sent up lanterns that week of winter that she ever came, to bring him a tiny babe in the form of someone once lost to him, and thus he called to her whenever he thought himself ready for more of his family to be returned to him.

At least, until the day when his lost were all with him again, and she no longer answered.

Still, he knew she got his letters, and thereafter sent them all the same so that she would know he did not forget to give her his gratitude for giving him something to live for again.

18th:

He'd arrived in the early afternoon, and that meant having to go forth and tackle official things right off. He'd expect no less from a foreign leader so he couldn't do less himself. Still, that meant that he had it out of the way, and had secured his accommodations.

Once he had, he moved to where he liked to send hs small army of lanterns from every year, then sat down and began to make lanterns. This year there were fifty-seven, and he had a letter for each one. It's more than he'd needed for both years before put together, and it worried him. He put it out of his mind though, fully intending to get the lanterns done before the sendoff that evening. He could wait to eat until then, but he never denied company helping him... and anyone who'd seen him at this before would notice the upturn in lantern number, certainly.

19th:

He wasn't in a hurry to leave, but he knew he had to be out before it hit afternoon proper... but that didn't stop him from getting a nice breakfast and dong some shopping before heading home. After all, there were things in Suna he just couldn't find back home.

22nd:

Suna was horribly dry. That was the first thought on his mind as he peered up at the exceedingly overly intense sun on the horizon where it was dipping into evening. It made him almost wish he'd decided to stay home... but the first lanterns going up impressed him enough that he kept the thoughts to himself, instead making sure that his companion, confused though the poor Uchiha was, knew he didn't have to stick beside him if he wanted to roam now that they were here. He knew their timeline, so he didn't have to worry about leaving without him, and they already had their rooms for their stay too.

23rd:

If he had been anyone else, he'd have sunburned. Terribly.

He spent the entire day, from early morning, to the middle of the afternoon, exploring and looking through things, picking up lanterns and materials to make more. People were going to stare, he was sure... but he had a lot to make. He reconsidered after a moment and decided to go for intricacy instead of individualism, and could be found carefully stenciling in pictures oh a large lantern for all the people who had died at his hands.

The other lantern was carefully painted with a rising dawn, of course. He would be at it for a while, in case anyone wished to speak to him. He certainly peeked up at people enough his curiosity, even while working, shone through.

24th:

He was dragging his feet. Morning had come and gone, and though he didn't intend to stay for a third sending, the temptation was strong. Still, he was making his way throught he crowd, soaking in the energy of it and heading for one last pass of the food stalls before going to meet up with Sasuke to head home.

All

He'd spent the whole of the festival roaming here and there, watching the lanterns go up with distinct interest. He'd sent up exactly one during his time in the village. For his mother.

No one else was getting a lantern out of him, and he was satisfied enough simply examining the people and taking in the different ways they acted... as well as pertinent information and patterns, of course.

He'd arrived towing Itachi in his wake, and the first evening had been spent settling in. He doubted he was the only Konoha shinobi and he wanted to make sure that they got a good room for their stay. Then it would be off to feeding his teammate and writing his letter for the next night.

There was no hurry though, and he was content to roam and replenish things he'd run out of since the year previous on their last trip to Suna for the festival. Namely, these really good senbon he liked. Which seemed to be sold at a different location each year.

So far, he hadn't had any luck, but he was sure he'd find them before they went home.

It was the last day of the festival, and he had almost not managed to make it. He'd gotten tangled up in a really tricky travel fiasco on the way, and he'd just have to apologize to Karin if he'd missed her because of it. He knew that she'd been looking forward to seeing him there.

He'd just have to hope for the best really, and if not see her, at least find her a really nice present.

This had become a tradition for he and Iruka, save for the rare times Itachi had missed due to his long, long missions. This year marked the end of that little spell, glad to be able to do things with his friends that didn't involve the possibility of being discovered and killed, though his training was difficult to properly quash in festive situations.

He trailed behind him leisurely, hands in his pockets to keep them warm, getting a good eye on what each shop contained.

December 18th - late afternoonish?

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Gai had arrived early enough to do a little sightseeing. Even though his father had been dead for years, Gai still made him one lantern every winter and sent it with his love, just because, and it would not take him long to make the lantern. There was plenty of time to re-familiarize himself with the village.

He picked up a late-lunch/early-dinner at one of the stands, enough for two, and found his way over to where his friend always was this time of year.

There were more lanterns scattered around Obito than Gai was used to seeing. He tried not to think too hard on it.

Gai dangled the lunch in front of Obito's face, waving the bag a little so the delicious smell wafted around. "I think it is time our Hokage took a break! Perhaps he would be amenable to letting someone else to make lanterns while he eats?"

thebestuchiha: (Whaaat?)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
He blinked away from the lantern he was currently securing together along one edge, gaze sliding over to Gai with a touch of surprise. "Have I been up here that long?"
senseiofthesea: (This is just an amazing story to hear.)

[personal profile] senseiofthesea 2014-12-09 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
"I missed having you along last year." He glanced to him a wry smile on his lips. "It's never the same when I come by myself, and we both know I wouldn't bring anyone else."
morningpeacock: (sparkle desu)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
"A while."

He sat down beside Obito, pushing the bag of takeout towards him, trying to encourage him to eat. "I am sure you are hungry by now! Come on! I think you will like it!"
thebestuchiha: (Sideways smile)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
He huffed a small laugh at that, then set aside the lantern in his hands as soon as he was sure it wouldn't come apart. "Alright alright, should I ask what it is?"
morningpeacock: (wink)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
"No, you should not," he teased, grinning. "You should just trust me that you will like it! And if you do not--which I am sure is impossible--I will make it up to you with a most excellent dessert!"
thebestuchiha: (Beaming)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
He gave a soft laugh and cleared a spot in front of him before extending his hands to take it. "By all means then."
morningpeacock: (yosh!)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gai happily handed over the food with a flourish, scooting subtly (by Gai's definition of the word) closer and picking up the unfinished lantern. He turned it over in his hands before continuing where Obito had left off.
thebestuchiha: (Well you know....)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
A small smile came to his lips as he watched him handle the paper item, then he pulled the food into his lap to start eating. He was curious what it was, of course, but hungry too and he'd just try and figure it out on the way.

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
The meal wasn't anything too fancy, but it wasn't food one usually found in Konoha. The preparation, the sauces, the spices...all were distinctly Suna. He figured since they were here, they might as well eat something special, and he did enjoy treating Obito to meals.

Gai worked carefully on the lantern. "So! How is it?"
thebestuchiha: (Well you know....)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
He was rather pleased, all told. It was nice, the food Suna had, and he never did take the time to properly enjoy it during his visits. Too many colors of tension much of the time. Or being too busy others. Thus Gai got a sweet smile as he watched him, relaxed. "You picked rather well."
morningpeacock: (needed a blushing icon so I made it)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Why, thank you!"

He blushed and turned back to his work, finishing up the lantern with ease. "Though I will still treat you dessert if you would like some! The vendors are selling a special hot chocolate, with just a little bit of spicy kick to it! I think you might enjoy it!"
thebestuchiha: (Sideways smile)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd be happy to." Even if chocolate wasn't his favorite, he still liked it. He leaned over and offered him his hand. "Lean in here a moment?"
morningpeacock: (smile twinkle)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Confused by the request, he took Obito's hand and leaned in. "Yes?"
thebestuchiha: (That's pretty cute...)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
He gave a little tug, reeling him a bit closer, then kissed his cheek near his lips before releasing him. "Just that."
morningpeacock: (flowers and dates)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
His cheeks turned a deep red and though part of his mind thought 'we really shouldn't be affectionate in public because we're in Suna and we don't know who might be watching,' he gave Obito's hand a squeeze and then raised it to his lips for a kiss over the knuckles.
thebestuchiha: (This is the funnest~)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
He dipped his head a touch with a sweet smile of his own. "I should probably finish before it gets cold." The murmur was soft.
morningpeacock: (smile twinkle)

[personal profile] morningpeacock 2014-12-09 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
That beautiful smile... If Gai could be any more in love with the man than he already was, all it would take was one of those smiles.

"Oh! Yes, right! Of course!" He released Obito's hand with a laugh and picked up supplies to begin on another lantern. "You are not getting cold, are you?"
thebestuchiha: (That's pretty cute...)

[personal profile] thebestuchiha 2014-12-09 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
"No, even in winter the daytime deserts are still warmer than home." The murmur was soft, and he shook his head. "It's why I don't mnd being outside to do this."
