Who: Neji and Hinata
When: August 21st
Where: Training field
Notes: Hyuuga drama imminent
He'd actively avoided her for a week after the meeting. The one that ripped apart their shining futures and instead set heavy weights upon their shoulders. Much like he didn't trust himself to speak cordially to Hizashi for a day or two afterward, Neji was even more wary of Hinata. She didn't deserve his anger, but more than that, he didn't have the first idea of where their new boundaries stood.
Should he treat her any differently? More.. informally? Drop the honorific and greet her as the 'equal' they were meant to be? Or would she think he was accepting this arrangement and follow his lead? The lines they walked had been blurred before by the illusion of equality, but never to this degree. And when each glance and every nuance of body language and intonation mattered, he couldn't even begin to imagine what he might say to her.
But he couldn't avoid her forever, and their.. marriage was set to be finalized much too soon. He stopped avoiding her, but two days later and he had yet to actually come across her even in passing. But given he was still avoiding the compound, perhaps it wasn't such a mystery. With guilt, he wondered what sort of other meetings she might have been pulled into, and the thought led him to a gift that he was sure was inappropriate on a few very traditional levels.
Neji wasn't completely decided on whether or not he'd gift it to her anyway, and elected to simply seek her out instead. He still had absolutely no idea how to approach her, how to talk to her or what to say. She could very well be upset with him for one of several reasons. But distance wasn't doing anything to solve any of their problems.
It took him another day to track her down to a training field, and he edged through the treeline to greet her from a distance. A wave, casual and friendly with a smile and voice to match. Like everything wasn't falling apart.
"Hinata-sama," he called. "Would you mind taking a brief respite?"
