Lantern Sending Festival

The Event Details as Relevant to Characters
Dates: December 17th-25th
Where: Sunagakure

Every year, Suna takes this week and turns it into a time to honor those they've lost over the course of the year. It's one of the only times during the year, Exams excluded, that Suna really welcomes people from outside the village, feeling that anyone is welcome to revere the dead, so long as they're respectful about it.

Every evening will see people sending lit lanterns out of the village, many of which will have letters to the dead. During the day beforehand, there is usually a rather vibrant festival air, where local treats can be gotten and games can be played. All of these close up after dark so as not to disgrace those doing a sending except for the food sellers, and it's not unheard of that child toys can be found in excess during this time as well.

The History Behind the Holiday
The holiday has rather interesting beginnings, as once upon a time it was just a local tradition to send up lanterns at funerals, with no big fanfare otherwise being given. Now, this holiday has taken on a day and a purpose, after the story of the man who lost everyone, and was given them back by the lady of reincarnation. Due to this, it's not unheard of that children are conceived during this holiday under the belief that they might be revived loved ones.

The Story
The story begins with a man, whose name is long forgotten, who had lost everyone to war and sickness. His three children, a son and two daughters, his wife, his brother, his nephew, and even his parents were all lost to him, leaving him with nothing but grief and sadness. It was a terrible year, and he did not know how he could recover from the last of his losses, his four-year-old daughter, the youngest of the children and the longest to survive. He strongly considered joining them.

Instead, he wrote a letter, spilling out his grief and sadness, detailing how much he missed them to every loved one lost in that year and the year before. He knew no one on this plane could read the words he wrote, but that did not mean that they might not reach the next. Thus, that day, when he would have sent up a paper lantern for his daughter's memory, he made it from that long, heart-rending letter, and sent that instead.

What he did not expect was for a woman to come to him later that night, wiping his tears and saying nothing at all, who took him into her arms and comforted away his sorrows. By morning she was gone, leaving only the memory of warmth behind. He thought he dreamed her, in his pain, and thought nothing more of it until she came to him, a child in her arms, and smiled a beautiful smile at him as she handed him the child. A boy, one who looked exactly as his dead son. When he looked up she was gone, leaving the child with him, and no matter how he searched, no one had heard of her.

Thus, on the same week as the year before, he sent up another lantern, and he was joyous that she came to him, staying with him until morning as his son slept in his bassinet nearby.

Just as the year before, she returned to him again later in the year, giving him a child. He did not recognize this one at first, for he had not known his dead wife as a child, but when he went digging through pictures he held of his family, that informed him of who his little girl was. Of course, the woman did not stay any more than she had the year before, and he, being too busy with two small children, could not search.

Instead, he focused, sending up no lanterns that year, save one in the spring for a neighbor which did nothing at all.

It was only when he sent up lanterns that week of winter that she ever came, to bring him a tiny babe in the form of someone once lost to him, and thus he called to her whenever he thought himself ready for more of his family to be returned to him.

At least, until the day when his lost were all with him again, and she no longer answered.

Still, he knew she got his letters, and thereafter sent them all the same so that she would know he did not forget to give her his gratitude for giving him something to live for again.

"Then I should make sure the girls don't find some other trouble to dive into." He gave Adela a nod and turned on his heal. "Try not to get yourself killed, Milani-kun; you're interesting!"

Kisame didn't look back. If she thought of something else she wanted, she'd catch up.
abileunaspada: (Okay fine I'm smiling.)

"... I could say the same to you," Adela grinned, almost cheeky as she watched Kisame starting to go back. True, Kisame would be a lot harder to kill than she was at the moment, but that didn't mean it couldn't happen. That and she just didn't want him to have the last word.
noboatbigenough: (This is my good side.)

If Kisame hears her, he gives no sign of it, but he's smiling as he walks away.

"Okay, okay, but I won't let you wriggle out of it, you know.." she reminded him, a wag of her free finger for emphasis. Kakashi-san had taught Tenzou to lock his problems up to dwell on later when they were a little too much to take, and while the advice was reasonably sound for someone in Tenzou's position... her brother had distinct trouble remembering to actually reopen the box he put his problems in, and therefore rarely dealt with them. It made her worry, and so she melded into the role of mediator between Tenzou and his problems.

Yamato nodded, albeit somewhat reluctantly and lead them off down the market street in search of the vendor.
He knew all too well that she wouldn't let him dodge this one, but their time together was often short and he wanted to savor it.

With that in mind, he located the stall almost immediately and ducked away to retrieve their snack. Sweets always made him feel better, fond memories linked to almost all the time's he'd indulged in them and Yamato was soon back a her side with a portion for them each.

"Here. So what's been your favorite stop since I saw you last?"
Changing the subject was a little obvious, but he was genuinely interested in her adventures and always looked forward to hearing the details that would sometimes be left out of her letters.

"I'm aware. I am also aware that your father has a temper and isn't entirely in the habit of limiting his anger to involved parties." It was a simple truth, to his view, and he gave her a wan smile. "I did have to negotiate with the man after all."

"You should talk to Natsumi, that Uchiha woman who made my cake last year? I'm sure she'd love to help with the food." He laughed and waved a hand. "I'm sure it'll be great."

He once again just moved, abandoning his construction entirely midmotion and appearing off near the 'shore', immediately dragging a sheen of metal with him from the dryer area. There was a touch of a smirk to his lips, but he was far from idle, pulling up and flinging a cascade of sharp metal at the man.

It wasn't often he needed to default to his bloodline, but it make it clear he was being serious.

"...Is there." He was looking at her thoughtfully. Konoha shinobi, they had the tendency to try to feed him. Was it a cultural thing in that village?

"Neee, it's true! Come on, come on." The poor guy seemed a bit thin, maybe it was people's paternal instincts to fatten him up? "If you don't mind, we can share some."

Kisame diverted his course as soon as Samehada gave him an indication of Sephiroth moving. Catching the other man was going to be most of this battle, and Kisame went through various ways to do that.

Well, there was one way that might work, but it was risky, as he'd have to convince the other man that it was worth taking a risk and getting close enough to land a blow. And Kisame rarely left openings like that. Sephiroth would know that, and just that knowledge worked against the plan.

Until then, Kisame formed several clones to converge on Sephiroth. Most fell pray to the cascade of metal, and the rest of that attack, Kisame was able to deflect with Samehada. Greedily, the sword pulled for chakra, gathering whatever it could.

Quickly, Kisame switched places with one of the clones, and created a few more, sending all of his constructs and himself converging on Sephiroth. Press the attack. Kisame could do this all day, but eventually one of them would make a mistake or be forced to concede. Kisame didn't intend for it to be him.

Yukimi tipped her hat up a little more, sticking a sugar-dusted mochi into her mouth and chewing thoughtfully before answering.

"I visited Turtle Island a while ago! That was pretty fun. I had to stay hidden, though.. there was some pretty serious training going on while I was there..."
teachingpeace: (Hmm?)

"Ahhh, if you insist then of course I have no protest to this." He tilted his head slightly, shifting to follow, and waved her to lead.

Sephiroth was a strong fan of avoiding being hit instead of deflection. He was strong, incredibly so, and always had been, but he was also fast, and it was there that he had an edge on Kisame. He intended to use it.

Of course, where they were converging on was metal, and as soon as the first attack fell, it became very clear that Sephiroth had left a clone of his own, an area genjutsu laid over it instead of on Kisame himself to make it look real instead of the single gleam of metal it actually was.

It lasted longer than the typical clone simply because of the metal, brittle as it was, that it was formed of, and flashed a victorious smile as it finally crumbled.

Sephiroth had concealed his chakra on his last switch to get the clone there, and was coming at him hard from behind with his blade.

Kisame grit his teeth when the clone disintegrated and Samehada didn't instantly start pulling in another direction. It was a powerful ninja with a lot of finesse that could hide chakra so well. On one hand Kisame wasn't surprised about Sephiroth, but on the other, he still wanted to win.

Sepiroth would come for his most unprotected area, which had always been his back, so Kisame was ready. A pulse of chakra from the sword made sure he still wasn't under effects of genjutsu, and this was so risky, but if it worked, Kisame would have a worthwhile victory.

So when Sephiroth attacked, Kisame was still turning, too slow to deflect fully or even begin to dodge. A low grunt was pushed out of him, and for the first time, his expression held something like surprise.

The blood was instant, but the wound was not fatal. Still, Kisame's flesh surrounded and gripped the blade as he shot Sephiroth a bloody smile.

He took in the hit immediately, noting the danger level of it and the man's reaction. His gaze quickly focused in on Kisame's, checking if that was a game ender or if he was simply readying for more. He had no desire to get nailed to the wall for an error in judgement in a spar.

Thus, he flashed a smirk right back, ready to vanish away but also checking on the man in roundabout fashion. "First real hit."

"Searching for an oasis can be an annoying task when the scenery is sand as far as the eye can see." Which was the say it was probably the most boring c-rank a chunin or genin could ever be assigned in Suna. Well patrolling around the village cliffs too, but it was less frustrating than searching for an oasis. At least you expected only to see sand dunes as far as the eye could see in that situation.

The fact that he has had the pleasure of dealing with her father in diplomatic situations is the only thing that keeps her from huffing in minor annoyance. Her realtionship with the man mighte be strained, but it frustrated when anyone else pointed out that he was generally less than pleasant to deal with. "You may be at least somewhat right." And that was probably the main reason she hasn't said anything to the man in the last three weeks about her and Neji.

While Sephiroth was grinning, Kisame made his move, pulling at any chakra available in the blade at the same time he gripped it with a chakra reinforced strength. Blood coated the blade again, dripping from his hand, but he showed no sign of the pain. He moved, putting every ounce of speed he possessed into the motion.

It forced the sword deeper, and then through, but Kisame had suffered worse before and knew he could heal, and moreover, Sephiroth would have to sacrifice Masamune, even for a moment, to get away. Or he could stay and try to pull the blade out, and probably find out that Kisame didn't need his blade to drain someone of their chakra, especially with the nice physical connection Sephiroth had so nicely provided.

Samehada was dropped, and moved on its own to make a charge at Sephiroth as well. Kisame used his free hand, kunai looped around one finger, to reach for the other man.

Now, would he sacrifice his weapon to Kisame? Or would he fall prey to the real trap.

"Got you."

"Now that's not a mission any Hoshigaki would do well in." They were really too reliant on water to do well for long in a desert anyway, but that kind of exposure? It would take very careful preparation not to succumb to the light and heat, and the dryness.

The girls looked on, both a little horrified at the mere prospect. The older one muttered something that sounded like admitting defeat. Oasis searching was far worse.

Kisame chuckled. "I think we've found a way to make them behave, eh?"

"Natsumi?" Well, Mika would definitely make a point to meet her then! "Alright, I'm sure with some more hands in the mix it'll all go off without a hitch!" She was pretty good at party planning and figured this event would be simple enough to pull off.

She doesn't expect it, but she can feel it. And she almost makes some scathing remark about being a pain in the ass, though it comes out as a huff instead. She refuses to give the duckbutt any sort of satisfaction if she can help it. She actually makes a point of doubling back toward a well-lit and crowded area even as her senses protest at the sudden explosion of presences on her internal radar.

She really hates him right now. Hates how he's delaying her from her bed. How he's making her headache a hundred times worse. So while her silence is an effort to make it seem like he isn't bothering her, the simple fact that her headache is about to make her head explode a victory for him if he ever found out.

Not that it would really matter as she wandered into a building thinking she could slip out the back and lose him entirely. Apparently, it wasn't just a normal quiet gathering full of people. It seemed like Karin had lead them both right into a more somber portion of the festival. Isn't this just peachy? She thinks as she quietly takes a seat in an effort to not to draw too much attention to how she really doesn't belong there.

Considering she keeps the pups with her fairly regularly, the fact that they aren't with her in Suna is only because they weren't quite ready for that many new people. And it doesn't hurt that she's practically ready to bubble over with a report of how they're doing either.

"Kazuki has said my name. Chikako is taking a little longer, but that's okay she'll get there right?"

For the love of -- in obviously trying to be annoying, she's apparently led them straight into something they have no part in. And then sits down in the middle of it instead of ducking right back out. Sasuke stares at her for a moment, equal parts bewildered and astonished at the lack of logic going on with this person who hopes to become an actual kunoichi, before he finds himself restraining the urge to go for a weapon when a hand lands on his shoulder.

"Welcome," the owner of the hand says: an older man, former shinobi judging by the stiffness in his movements: poorly-healed wounds rather than any effect of age. "Even outsiders seek peace, I see."

Sasuke opens his mouth to say no, but before he quite manages to get the word out he's being settled into the chair next to Karin. A glance around the circle of people gathered makes it clear that leaving now would be ruder than anything else, which of course is where Karin has decided to lead them. He shoots her a glare rather than saying anything, accusing even as the low murmur of the man who is apparently in charge resumes.
