Lantern Sending Festival

The Event Details as Relevant to Characters
Dates: December 17th-25th
Where: Sunagakure

Every year, Suna takes this week and turns it into a time to honor those they've lost over the course of the year. It's one of the only times during the year, Exams excluded, that Suna really welcomes people from outside the village, feeling that anyone is welcome to revere the dead, so long as they're respectful about it.

Every evening will see people sending lit lanterns out of the village, many of which will have letters to the dead. During the day beforehand, there is usually a rather vibrant festival air, where local treats can be gotten and games can be played. All of these close up after dark so as not to disgrace those doing a sending except for the food sellers, and it's not unheard of that child toys can be found in excess during this time as well.

The History Behind the Holiday
The holiday has rather interesting beginnings, as once upon a time it was just a local tradition to send up lanterns at funerals, with no big fanfare otherwise being given. Now, this holiday has taken on a day and a purpose, after the story of the man who lost everyone, and was given them back by the lady of reincarnation. Due to this, it's not unheard of that children are conceived during this holiday under the belief that they might be revived loved ones.

The Story
The story begins with a man, whose name is long forgotten, who had lost everyone to war and sickness. His three children, a son and two daughters, his wife, his brother, his nephew, and even his parents were all lost to him, leaving him with nothing but grief and sadness. It was a terrible year, and he did not know how he could recover from the last of his losses, his four-year-old daughter, the youngest of the children and the longest to survive. He strongly considered joining them.

Instead, he wrote a letter, spilling out his grief and sadness, detailing how much he missed them to every loved one lost in that year and the year before. He knew no one on this plane could read the words he wrote, but that did not mean that they might not reach the next. Thus, that day, when he would have sent up a paper lantern for his daughter's memory, he made it from that long, heart-rending letter, and sent that instead.

What he did not expect was for a woman to come to him later that night, wiping his tears and saying nothing at all, who took him into her arms and comforted away his sorrows. By morning she was gone, leaving only the memory of warmth behind. He thought he dreamed her, in his pain, and thought nothing more of it until she came to him, a child in her arms, and smiled a beautiful smile at him as she handed him the child. A boy, one who looked exactly as his dead son. When he looked up she was gone, leaving the child with him, and no matter how he searched, no one had heard of her.

Thus, on the same week as the year before, he sent up another lantern, and he was joyous that she came to him, staying with him until morning as his son slept in his bassinet nearby.

Just as the year before, she returned to him again later in the year, giving him a child. He did not recognize this one at first, for he had not known his dead wife as a child, but when he went digging through pictures he held of his family, that informed him of who his little girl was. Of course, the woman did not stay any more than she had the year before, and he, being too busy with two small children, could not search.

Instead, he focused, sending up no lanterns that year, save one in the spring for a neighbor which did nothing at all.

It was only when he sent up lanterns that week of winter that she ever came, to bring him a tiny babe in the form of someone once lost to him, and thus he called to her whenever he thought himself ready for more of his family to be returned to him.

At least, until the day when his lost were all with him again, and she no longer answered.

Still, he knew she got his letters, and thereafter sent them all the same so that she would know he did not forget to give her his gratitude for giving him something to live for again.

He hissed sharply and instead of moving away, to escape as would be wise, he lunged closer, bringing himself well within easy striking distance even without the blades to do as much damage as he could. He could feel that they'd need to draw a close soon before one of them was too badly injured, as it was a friendly spar after all, but that didn't mean he'd back off just yet.

Even if he knew the attack he was about to get slammed with would hurt.

He was looking at her with a long even stare at that. "Maybe you should have."

If she were a little younger she would have preened at the compliment. She loved her home, couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Especially not in any village that didn't have to struggle to survive. "They'll learn to respect the desert before they leave I imagine. And if they don't, well you know where to find me."

She grins a moment and then turns her attention briefly to the girls again. Checking one last time that they're doing as they're supposed to to satisfy herself. "Please enjoy the rest of your stay Hoshigaki-san." She says with a quick dip of her chin and slight bow at her waist.

"They will, if I have any say about it, but who knows? I might end up coming back with them someday. Water Country just doesn't have the environment to work on resistance training with Water Release."

But he grins back, dipping his head. "We will; thank you."

The girls get a stern look as he returns to the lanterns, urging them to get it done quickly and without disruption. Idly, Kisame wonders if he might get a chance to spar with her someday. It'd be fun.

Kisame twisted and blocked the moves as the water closed around them, with that peculiar consistency of a Water Prison, but so much stronger. And bigger, putting them both at the center of a massive dome of water that could probably be seen halfway across the desert.

One of Sephiroth's attacks hit, and blood bloomed in the water, but Kisame only smiled wider, and a flicker of his hands through familiar seals, had several sharks, ranging from large to ridiculously huge appearing, and taking up a circling pattern around them at different degrees. He didn't have any illusions that he'd won yet, but he'd gained a momentary advantage, and this was the last big move. It was all down to who would be forced to tap out first.

And thinking of illusions, Kisame made sure Samehada sent a burst of chakra through him to dislodge any genjutsu Sephiroth might be trying. He swiped at Sephiroth then, and twisted to make use of his increased grace and mobility in water to keep Sephiroth from gaining the upper hand.

"Why?" She doesn't understand. Why should she have minded protecting someone she cared about? "Does it bother you that I'd protect you?"
lostmarauder: (Uncertain Grin)

[personal profile] lostmarauder 2015-04-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Protecting me doesn't bother me at all. I was talking about the waiting." He shook his head, giving her a wry smile. "I didn't know protecting was in the topic at all."
sensethis: (awkward | i don't know | "oops")

She flushes and waves a hand. "I don't mind waiting for you either. We planned to meet, of course I'm going to wait." Just pretend she hadn't completely missed the topic change okay.

He couldn't breathe underwater so this was going to get very tricky very quickly. Knowing this, he kept himself as close to Kisame as possible, determined to use his small blades to get some kind of traction. Letting himself be caught in this meant that he'd have to give, most likely, but not yet.

He was from Kiri, after all, and in Kiri you learned to hold your breath.

It wouldn't last very long though, especially with the rapid paced conflict.

Kisame couldn't help nodding in acknowledgement of the tactic. Blood-loss would decrease the time he'd be able to spend before having to tap out, and even in water, Sephiroth's speed was great. Kisame was able to dodge or block most of them, but not all, and again blood clouded the water.

He was smiling the whole time though, gills pumping. This was splendid, and forcing him to go this far!

He looked sideways at her, then hummed and fell silent, tugging lightly on her to start back toward the more populated areas. "I guess you will."

It's a serene happiness, contentment with how things are and are likely to continue to be in the near future. At least for the moment, he has no real reason for doubt.

But his mind turns back to his cousin, smile fading as he remembers that while she's no longer bound to him, the weight of the clan is still prominent. She'll have to marry someday, and likely won't be rid of the pressure until she does, but he hopes she manages to do so for love in some way.

"Hinata-sama.. is there someone she's interested in?"

It was surprising insight, words that made Kisame suddenly seem much more human in their admission. More relatable, on some level, to know he was made of more than sharp grins and an enormous reserve of chakra. All the same, it wasn't too hard to see where such a title came from, unfortunate as the source of it was. Kirigakure was far from the ambivalence of Konoha after all, even if did suspect the moniker was more than skin deep.

"It's a festival to honor the dead," he said simply enough, feeling a touch awkward while Kisame distracted himself with his sword and sheathe. "No one's born alone."

Neji shifted and considered plucking his book back up again in an effort to appear similarly occupied, but elected to call Kisame on his apparent nerves instead. "Is Samehada troubling you, Hoshigaki-san?"

The subtle touch of affection draws a small smile from him, the other locals forgotten as his attention centers on her. The tea does appears to relax her to some degree and he's glad to see it. It seems that they have this in common, and Neji couldn't be happier to have found someone to share this particular hobby with.

"It's certainly peaceful." He doesn't know if it's usually that way or if everyone's simply busy at the festival, but it suits their purposes for now if nothing else. "Is there anything in particular you'd like to eat?"

"And what would you propose I do exactly?" He looked sideways at her, lips twitching into a smile.

Sometimes its the natural remedies that work best and quickest as she lets the gentle warmth seep into her fingers from the earthenware cup. It helps that the light comes mostly from candles or is filtered through sheets of deeply colored cloth strung up under the establishments skylights.

"Order anything you want. Most of the menu is really good." She should eat but the ache in her temples has left most food unappealing. She'll order something to pick at if Neji doesn't want to share. "I'll pick a little at whatever we get?" Her voice shifts up at the end in a question to see if that is okay with him.

"I've already told you what I'd have you do." It wasn't her fault he was resistant to the idea of leaving his village. Not that she could entirely blame him given the consequences for defecting. Still she wouldn't have to wait for him nearly as much if they shared a village.

He gave her a solemn look, then turned slightly and moved on ahead of her. His tone was lighter than the glance would have implied. "Yeah, so, what do you want to do with the rest of our time?"

She frowns at his back and sighs. She didn't want to fight, that wasn't why she wanted to meet up with him. "Let's get you fed and," she murmurs lightly almost bordering into teasing.

"True enough. It's our actions in life that make us alone." The words were thick and bitter on his tongue. Was he truly better that way? He'd had conversations that threw that into doubt, and yet, here he was, alone. Some small part that he'd worked to crush for all his life groaned weakly and wished not to be, but Kisame ignored it. Now wasn't the time and place for such weakness.

"And is it still honoring when we've made ourselves alone, or is it a selfish act?" Kisame shrugged again. The question was meant to make Neji think; he already knew the answer was the latter. "But as for Samehada, this blade was given to me by the shinobi who's lantern this is. I was never given Samehada; I took it, so there's no place for Samehada tonight."

Sephiroth could have drawn things out, toyed the spar further... but that was for open conflict when he needed to worry about the aftermath. In a spar? No, in a spar he could go full tilt and deal with his consequences and his eyes glowed with the thrill as he tried to get one last hit in on the other man.

If it didn't force him to concede he would unfortunately have to call for air, and while sad, it was less a loss, more a break to resume anther day.
lostmarauder: (Happy!)

[personal profile] lostmarauder 2015-04-15 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Are you saying I look hungry? Well, you're not wrong, I did hurry to get here." He laughed, looking over his shoulder to her, all traces of displeasure gone.
