Nagato kept close to him, making sure that the younger man didn't get too hurt, or accidentally kick into one of the allied people who got too close. More than once he checked him into the enemy again in just such a situation, though he wasn't overly worried.
Then again, Nagato was hardly without his own war path, and the constant influx of enemy was keeping him busy enough. He'd left his Paths behind on purpose, it was true, but the enemy was probably regretting that.
