Who: Tsutaki
When: Early afternoon
Where: Otogakure, greenhouse
Notes: Open to all Otogakure residents
Over the past decade, experimentation had given Tsutaki a number of plant-like characteristics. Some were beneficial, others less so. She was immune to nearly all toxins, with the notable exception of those that doubled as potent weedkiller. Tsutaki could down a bottle of undiluted poison with no ill effects if she was so inclined. All bodies emitted pheromones to an extent, but hers were more potent and smelled almost like a mild perfume custom-designed for her body chemistry. She had some measure of control over them, though it had taken a while to get to that point.
Her unusual body chemistry was advantageous in the ninja world, but it wasn’t without its downsides. Being plant-like meant she actually required more sunlight and water than an average person to function properly. Given how many missions required either night activity or concealing oneself in shadows, Tsutaki went out of her way to get as much sunlight as she possibly could when she wasn’t on a mission. If a mission could be accomplished just as well in broad daylight, that’s when she operated.
While the Otogakure greenhouse wasn’t strictly Tsutaki’s domain, it was where she spent a disproportionate amount of her time, and there was an entire restricted section where she conducted her research on plants. The oversized and very much sentient venus fly traps that she called her “babies” were just one of several reasons why very few people were allowed in the area without her permission and supervision. Orochimaru, of course, was one of them, and could override any permission requests she’d approved or denied.
Upon hearing someone approach, she made a quick note about what she’d last worked on and headed over to greet the person. It was best to get there before they crossed the threshold into the restricted area, given where the venus flyrtraps were situated.

Todays offering was a nice, filling bowl of soup and a covered pitcher of a special concoction she and Tsutaki had previously put their heads together to design. It was a sweet, thick drink that catered to her unique physiology, down to the carbonation they added to help her secondary respiratory needs. The final product was something like an especially syrupy soda, but Ashiko always felt slightly awkward offering the redhead tea, given the circumstances.

She moved to the border and motioned for Ashiko to join her. The venus fly traps wouldn't attack anyone right beside their "mother". Ashiko's diligence never failed to impress Tsutaki. Technically, Orochimaru was the only one she really owed any special consideration to unless specifically ordered otherwise, but she made an effort when she could. She didn't know if it extended to the lower ranked Oto nin who didn't have the privilege of being amongst Orochimaru's favoured, but she couldn't imagine Ashiko ever being rude or discourteous.
"Thank you for stopping by. I got so caught up in my research that I almost forgot to eat."

Like most ninja, Tsutaki was a light sleeper anyway, but it was still nice to have that extra bit of warning. Both for her own sake and for that of others. The natural toxins she experimented with were dangerous to anyone who didn't know how to handle them. Ashiko was on the short list of people Tsutaki trusted to be around them. Though a civilian, the dainty maid could be far more lethal than anyone would have expected her to be.

She had made sure to note that her unwanted hindrance had been rather soused at the time of injection, and that she wasn't sure exactly what, if any, effect the alcohol level of his blood had on the poison.

Tsutaki took the offered notepad, briefly scanning the notes. She'd read it over more in depth later. For now, she wanted to garner just enough to be able to discuss it a little more with Ashiko. She trusted that her notes would be thorough. Anyone who spent as much time in Orochimaru's presence as Ashiko did would know what information would be most pertinent to a researcher.
"...interesting. I hadn't thought to experiment with the effects other substances could have on poisons before."
Normally when she was poisoning someone, she made sure the dosage was high enough to overcome a resistance a person might have trained themselves to have.

"Is it safe to get new poisons?"

They were an excellent deterrent for keeping people away from her work. Her desire to keep people away from her work wasn't entirely selfish, either. The toxic immunity she'd developed over years of experimentation meant she could work with some extremely potent poisons - some of which were mild to moderately effective even with direct contact to the skin.
Fortunately, Peter had proven that he knew how to handle poisons properly. He gave them the respect and caution they deserved, so she was perfectly willing to share supplies with him. But it was still best that he stop just before her unofficial border guards nonetheless, since sometimes she worked with toxins that shouldn't be breathed in. Never in large enough quantities to make anywhere but her own area unsafe for others, but enough that it was best to make certain that she was available.

There was no known antidote yet, although she'd found a way to alter it to make a potent painkiller. Which, like just about every other drug, did not work on her. She was going to have to learn how to refine her chakra control enough to be capable of medical ninjutsu at this rate. Perhaps Orochimaru could teach her a jutsu that could function like painkiller if she caught him in a good mood.

He knew not everyone was careful enough for these things.

Even as a contact poison, it still took effect fast enough. It just took longer to kill the person than if the poison was ingested or got into the bloodstream.
"Needless to say, I would rather it not happen to you."
She wouldn't go so far as to get sentimental, but there were some people she liked in Otogakure more than others. Enough that she'd rather not see them die from something that was entirely preventable, at least.

Although a variety of personalities could be found in Otogakure, Tsutaki found she tended to get along best with those were were quieter and less assuming. Orochimaru himself wasn't a loud man. He had enough charisma and intelligence that people wanted to listen to him. It was rare for him to raise his voice, and anyone who made the serpentine Oto leader angry enough to yell had best pray to their deity of choice.
Power and intelligence were both prized in Otogakure, but those who had some power and very little intelligence tended to grate on Tsutaki's nerves.

"Around here I guess being not an idiot is a large step up though, isn't it?"

"Every village has at least one idiot...we have more than our fair share here," she said with a little chuckle.
Those were the shinobi that were sometimes thrown into battles as fodder or used for experiments. Occasionally, they proved themselves a little cleverer than one might have expected. There were, after all, different kinds of intelligence.

It was true about more than a few after all... Missing-nin seemed to come in three types when Orochimaru found them. Talented, bloodline, and delusional. Sometimes with a mix between the three.

Power was more common here than intelligence, Tsutaki had found. She was fortunate enough to possess both a bloodline and enough intelligence for Orochimaru to allow her to conduct her own experiments rather than solely being the subject of them.

"Then there are people who are perfect for the dangerous, complicated stuff, right?"

Usually, those sorts of missions were reserved for jounin. On occasion, chuunin might be permitted to go along for those missions, but it was rare without a jounin taking the lead. While Tsutaki was sometimes selected for those sorts of missions, she'd been brought along as an intelligent powerhouse rather than the team leader until very recently. Now that she was a jounin, she was eligible for those sorts of missions.
"And even amongst those people, some are more suited for information gathering than others."
Some ninja had odd appearances, and it was a waste of chakra to have someone undergo a henge no jutsu transformation for an extended period of time.

It made him good at what he did.

She could fight. She made it a point to be proficient enough in taijutsu that she could handle herself in a fight without using her chakra if need be. That being said, her ninjutsu was far better developed, and the pheromones she'd given herself in an experiment meant she could lightly prod people into giving away information they might normally be more tight-lipped about. Tsutaki was just glad that she'd eventually gotten that ability under control. She was always passively emitting more than a normal human would, but at least it was nowhere near what it had been in the first week after the experiment's success.

He knew just how much people could fall over themselves for her if she really tried.
