Notes: Nagato hasn't actually ever been to Konoha before... But he's doing his best to make sure no one realizes he's the leader of Ame... Sort of.

Nagato had taken a few precautions to make sure that when he left Ame, people wouldn't instntly peg him as the ruler of his country. First, he made sure that everyone still mostly only knew of Pein, not his given name, and second, he made sure that everyone thought orange when they thought of said leader. Neither of which, clearly, applied to him.

Just as a bit of added precaution, he made sure to keep on a jounin vest when he wasn't roaming in a kimono outfit, and had his hitai-ate on at all times when he was in public. He also, maybe perhaps was acquiring the habit of dodging his escort half the time because he was curious, and wanted to roam without it being quite so obvious that he was more than just another one of the jounin instructors.

People, after all, always acted so differently to a leader than someone they considered a peer, even a foreign one...

He did, of course, make sure that the Hokage knew, and then promptly set out to find Kushina. He had no wish for her to hunt him down and try to scold him. It was... awkward.

"Even if you have no affection for someone, it's only appropriate to give them proper respect."

"My teammates gave me respect due to my skills," Abel murmured. "But it seemed as if everyone else treated me either as a pariah or a barely tame animal that was seconds from turning on them."

He shook his head slightly and looked at Nagato. "You treat me like a person and a shinobi."

"It's what you are Abel... even if my first meeting with you might have made me think otherwise under another mindset."

Abel blushed and ducked his head. "Not my best act of diplomacy," he confessed.

"One of your worst honestly." He didn't even try to hide his humor.

"I managed to improve," Abel protested, but there was more laugh in his voice than honest injury.

"Thankfully. I would have hated to have to lock you in a closet until you settled down."

Abel laughed. "I can easily admit that my preferred method of official, political diplomacy is 'kill until there's no more left'. Which is why I never ask for diplomatic missions."

He scoffed softly. "You're better at them than you believe, but then, you've seen my methods. They're hardly... gentle."

Abel brushed the words aside. "You have more weight to throw around when you speak," he stated. "I am a simple shinobi."

He laughed then, tilting his head and looking sideways at him. "Once that wasn't so."

"But it is now," Abel remarked with a small grin of his own. "After all, you have those willing to lay their lives down for you. I would say that was something powerful."

"Yes, but how I got there is not a road I would have chosen." He shook his head sharply, ending the topic. "Have you been enjoying this village?"

Abel nodded. "It's larger than home and much more friendly. I do get the curious looks for being from Ame, and usually the first question the younger ones ask are if I'm from somewhere other than Ame."

He softly laughed. "Rather fun to see."

"Probably because you don't wear a rebreather. Ame became very well known for that before I took over." He shook his head slightly. "Not due to anything else."

"While it might be an interesting disguise, it's hard to really do anything with a rebreather on," Abel remarked. "At least vocally, because everything is muffled."

"It's actually rather useful." He gave a wry smile. "Good for keeping the rain off your face."

"I thought that's what the really large hats were for," Abel countered with a grin even though his tone was a touch wistful. The hats and robes for the Akatsuki, while distinct, was a goal that Abel hoped to one day be worthy of.

"Very much so, but then, my Akatsuki are their own quarter."

"There are some that wish to be counted among their number to better serve you," Abel admitted with a slight tilt of his head. "And others wish to eventually be worthy enough for possible consideration for your Akatsuki."

"Hopefully by way of promotion and not simply by way of being a mercenary." His tone was somewhat dry. He knew of the duality of the Akatsuki, and how some were... less than pleased that the two factions shared a name.

Abel snorted and shook his head. "A shame they can't have two different names. Akatsuki for your loyal shinobi and something else for the mercenaries."

He knew he wasn't mentioning anything that his lord hadn't already thought of.

"Considering our beginnings... it's better to keep it as it is. It leaves the enemies guessing and those outside unsure." He shook his head with a small smile.

Abel nodded, willing to accept his lord's thoughts on such a matter. "As you wish, sir."

He nodded in turn, lips quirking. "It's understandable not everyone sees it that way."
