Even if we're six feet underground
Where: Konoha Hospital
When: January 12th
Notes: Kushina on another visit to Obito's bedside, post-squishing.
She had told him to keep his promise or he'd get more than her fist. When Minato had returned, carrying the boy half dead and missing an eye, she couldn't bring herself to keep hers. The hospital saw more of her over the next two months than they had since she had arrived in the village. She had made a point of coming every two or three days to check up on his condition if she didn't have a rare mission out. Her previous visit had coincided with more good news, which she had whispered to his unconscious body. It felt like a sign that this year would bring good fortune.
So once again, on a cool January afternoon, Kushina took a seat at Obito's bedside. Her hand was rested over his as she rambled on about how Minato had reacted to the good news and everything she could think of from the days since her last visit. Her words finally trailed off to momentary silence and she gave his hand a squeeze.
"I told you to be extra careful, you dummy. Would you wake up already? You're really worrying me, y'know..."

Why, and how, did he end up back here though? He was under a rock, not usually a survivable thing and thus, totally perfect sense for the oh so witty rasp of words that escaped, barely alive. "Got a scratch. Punch later."

"Obito, you stupid idiot! I'll beat the crap out of you after you get out of the hospital for making us all worry, ya know!"
She wasn't mad or yelling though. She sounded as if she could cry, but tears were more Minato's department.

"S'a matter?"

""S'a matter?"! I'll tell you what's the matter! You promised you'd come back with everyone unharmed and I met you all at the gate and found out you nearly died!" Okay, now she was yelling. "You've been out cold for two months and I didn't know if you'd ever wake up! That's what's the matter!"
At least she wasn't punching him?

"They're alive. From what I heard, you saved them both. I'm pretty sure they've both been to visit you, they've just never really been here when I was."

She reached out a hand, about to stroke over his hair, but it hadn't really been washed that well... Instead, she let her hand drop gently on the shoulder closer to her.
"I guess it's a good thing Minato decided to dig your body out to bring back to the village. He said they thought you were dead, y'know."

And even longer until he was fit for duty again, if such a thing were even possible... She bit her lower lip, the worrying coming back. Would all this impact his dream and spirit that she wanted her future child to inherit? No, she couldn't think like that. It was too soon. She could put on a brave face and a smile for him.

That was as much argument as she was going to put up. Halfhearted at best, but not sounding angry at all. Her smile only flickered a little, but it returned quickly. After a pause, she reached her hand up to smooth over his hair. It was washable, and there were a lot more gross things to touch than greasy hair.
"How do you feel, Obito? Besides drugged up?"

"So... How long have you been awake? You remember anything anyone said before today?"

"Five minutes sounds about right. I mean, I've been talking at you for about twenty or more already, but the last few have been when you were actually responding."

Yup... She's gonna play a guessing game with him.

"It's someone older who's been a jounin for longer. Though you're on the right track."

It was out before she could stop herself. As soon as she realized it, she slapped her hand over her mouth. Her little guessing game was finally over. Part one was, anyway.

She nearly punched him, but stopped herself before her hand could fully close. As legendary as her temper was, she drew the line when it came to beating anyone badly injured already. Or this tired.
"Did you need more sleep? The other news can wait until you're rested more."

And wait she would, sitting right where she was. Unless he happened to sleep through visiting hours. Then she'd return the next day.

Or as carefully as she could as the room got dark. She swore she saw some kind of movement, so she took a chance and whispered over to him.
"Obito, you awake again?"

She got up and turned on a little lamp. It cast a gentle glow that didn't quite reach beyond the foot of his bed. She settled back in the chair before answering his question.
"You slept past dinner, the sun set a while ago. I figured I'd stick around until you woke up or the staff kicked me out."

He was clearly going to argue to the end about it.
