Where: A restaurant in Konoha, fairly upscale.
When: Sept. 15, afternoon. (Kakashi's birthday)
Notes: Closed to Obito, Kakashi, and Gai.

Gai very rarely had reason to dress up, so his fancy kimono mostly spent its time buried in mothballs. Now, though, Kakashi's birthday was special enough an occasion, as was their first official outing as boyfriends. Fancy clothes were a must. Surely Obito and Kakashi would appreciate it!

Or at least enjoy laughing at him.

Either way, Gai felt it was worth wearing.

Although... dressed like he was, he couldn't even do push-ups while waiting for his perpetually late friends to arrive for their lunchtime date, so instead Gai paced about anxiously, hoping that Kakashi didn't back out on them and go running back to Uzushio rather than face his own birthday party. He should have gone with Obito to pick up his Rival. Things would have gone much faster, and at least he would have something productive to do!

Where were they?!

Next time that the plan was to kidnap one of them for a lunch, Gai was most assuredly going to be doing the kidnapping, he decided. This was the second time and he was quite tired of being the one doing the waiting! He was not meant to be the one waiting and not doing!!

Obito had checked with Gai to see who was getting Kakashi, because they both knew if someone didn't then he wasn't coming. A bit of quick negotiation had left Obito in possession of the task, and he took off after getting dressed, inviting himself in without any preamble. "Kakashi, you up? Time to get dressed to go!"

His own brightly colored kimono already on, he had two for Kakashi to choose from that he'd picked up specifically so the man had zero excuses to coming with him. And they counted as birthday gifts. Perfect.

Kakashi was, surprisingly, awake. After being rudely roused early in the morning from the lie-in he intended to last all day, he'd seen no real point in trying to get back to sleep and had instead decided to dedicate this totally normal and not special day to re-reading a few dusty tomes from his shelves.

The entrance of Obito, therefore, was a mild disturbance.. But he couldn't say he hadn't been expecting it.

"I'm already dressed," he replied firmly, eyeing Obito's oddly formal outfit with a sardonic twitch of his eyebrow. "What's with the outfit?"

"Gai's idea." Then he came over and dropped cloth in Kakashi's lap, one black with white patterns, and one deep green with paler green. "Happy birthday! Get dressed."

Kakashi shifted his arms, putting his book aside and staring at the piles of fabric in his lap. This was... Oh no.

"Thank you," He lifted one of the robes up and studied it. "But you've got to be joking. I thought you just wanted to take me out for food?"

"I intended to, but I wanna see Gai in something not spandex, don't you?" He didn't even try not to pout. "Are you saying you don't like either one?"

Kakashi sighed laboriously, giving Obito a long stare before relenting. He knew he wasn't going to win this one. There was no way Obito would let him leave without putting the robe on and even if he did then Kakashi would have to sit and look at that torturous pout all day. In the end, his dignity wasn't worth the hassle.

He pushed the black one aside and took up the pale green one instead as he stood.

"No, they're both- Thank you. I like this one best," he held the chosen one up with a small smile as he made a move toward his room to change.

Satisfied, Obito as willing to wait for Kakashi to come back out, hands absently playing with the heavy material of his own clothes as he waited, bouncing on his heels. He wanted to see, he could admit, but he was also hungry.

Kakashi returned a little later looking incredibly uncomfortable, but very much dressed in Obito's gifted kimono. He'd kept his uniform sleeveless navy undershirt on underneath it instead of wearing a separate mask, but he'd taken off his headband at least.

"Is the place we're going fancy, then?" he asked, picking at the fabric gingerly and giving Obito a weary look. It had been an incredibly long time since he'd worn anything formal, and even then it had never been this.. flashy.

He got up and moved over, hooking an arm around his shoulders to start for the door with him. "No idea. Didn't ask after that but Gai was really insistent about dressing up."

"Ah, alright.." he mumbled weakly, letting himself be dragged away with the air of a man accepting his fate, only wriggling free momentarily to perform his usual routine before exiting and closing up behind them. Of course Gai was insistent, Gai was always insistent, but Kakashi managed to wriggle out of his more harebrained ideas most of the time.. With Obito, however, it was much harder to dodge the proverbial bullet. He wondered if they purposely planned it that way.

He sighed and rubbed at his closed eye kind of sleepily before he looked to Obito once his home was secure again.

"Then lead the way."

Obito leaned in, bumping shoulders with him. "Hey, don't be so dispirited, I'm pretty sure Gai is paying."

And if he hadn't been before he sure was now. "C'mon, he's probably trying not to climb the walls at this point." He shook his head, then tugged on his arm before starting out at a clip.

So much for not making a big deal out of the day, he supposed. He'd agreed to dinner under the impression that dinner was all it would be; just a nice, quiet dinner with his- with Obito and Gai... And yet, here he was dressed loudly enough to make up for his reluctance and about to accompany with two of the biggest loudmouths he knew. This was definitely some poor choice making.

He couldn't help but smile at Obito, though. The thought and the effort was nice, and he appreciated it despite his disinclination.

"I really wanna see what he's wearing. I don't think I've ever actually seen him in formal wear, have you?" He looked sideways at him as they walked, curious now that he was thinking about it.

"I don't think so. Not properly, at least..." he shook his head after wracking his memory bank. "Only funeral wear, if that counts."

"Pretty sure it doesn't. That's really not very Gai, you know?" He steered him along, looking for him because he knew Gai was waiting outside. Somewhere around here.

"I'm kind of surprised he hasn't found some excuse to dress formal before now.." he mumbled almost to himself as he scanned their surroundings, trying to figure out where it was that they'd planned to take him to dine.

"FINALLY!" Gai practically pounced on them when they arrived, cornering them like a puppy whose people had just come home and who must take him for a walk now. He was so stir crazy from just loitering outside the restaurant waiting.

He looked them both over approvingly, grinning from ear-to-ear. "You look very splendid! Both of you! I like that color, Kakashi. Did you pick it yourself?" Though Kakashi looked uncomfortable, there was just something so fitting about Obito's robes. Gai quite liked the way he looked in them.

Then he squished between them, taking each by an arm. "And I hope you are both ready for a very nice lunch on this very special day!" For his Rival's sake, Gai wouldn't shout to the world that it was Kakashi's birthday--though that information was easy enough to obtain if one tried--but that didn't stop him from declaring it an important day regardless.

Obito blinked a few times, then fell into step lest he find himself dragged as he tilted his head, examining Gai's outfit. "I picked Kakashi's clothes actually..."

Huh, Gai managed to find something appropriately loud... but actually kind of fittingly nice. He tilted forward a little. Yep, Gai was showing more skin than he was used to seeing.

Kakashi had folded his arms a little self-consciously when he'd arrived, not entirely feeling this get up in a public place where people could see him. He wasn't exactly an inconspicuos character, especially not with Gai's vibrant personality and dress code, and the Hokage himself. It suddenly felt like every eye in the vicinity was on them. That wasn't to say he didn't think they both scrubbed up nice, but his attention was a little more selfishly focused at that moment.

His movement didn't last long, however, as Gai soon saw to it by pulling one of his arms free. In retaliation he used the other to resolutely hold the collar together despite the fact that he was wearing his shirt and had nothing there to show but more fabric.

"Sure, I'm starving," he said, still peering around with the eye not tucked under his hair. At least in a classier restaurant than what shinobi usually dined in they were less likely to be disturbed by someone they knew.

Gai was keen on being flamboyant enough for the three of them and if Kakashi wanted none of the attention, Gai would gladly do what was needed to make sure all eyes ended up on him (and then probably eyes would roll and people grumble about eccentric shinobi...and everyone would go about their business).

He treated them both to his usual big smile, noting that Obito seemed to be looking at him a bit longer than usual and...Gai was still getting used to this.

But one thing he was very used to: Kakashi was always game for free food, Gai had long since found out. Still, he gave Kakashi a stern, disapproving stare. "Is that because you just woke up?" He tsk-tsked and shook his head. "You must rise and seize the day, Rival! Do not wait for Obito to come make that happen for you!"

Obito blinked a couple times, then waved his free hand in negation, the other kind of useless to getting that point across. "Eh? What? No no! Kakashi was awake when I got there. You know, probably waiting for me!"

Or not, most likely not, but he'd give Kakashi some doubt. Er. The benefit of the doubt. Yes. He looked over at Kakashi.

What was he doing? "Kakashi, you look like you think someone is going to rip your clothes off or something. You don't have to hold your clothes on you know."

He pointedly ignored Obito's comment, making the firm decision there and then to accidentally kick him under the table once they'd sat down to eat. Instead, he focused his attention on Gai's rude assumption.

"I was woken pretty early on, actually," he confirmed, trying to look his usual brand of casual while battling with his discomfort. It was getting easier the more time he spent dealing with it, and at least he still had his mask, but he still couldn't suffocate the urge to scarper. "I didn't see the point in going back to sleep. I thought I'd spend the day relaxing, then I was accosted by formal wear and here I am."

Kakashi might not have reacted, but Gai did, with a loud and embarrassed: "Obito!!" as he ushered them into the restaurant to be seated. ...They were late for his reservation.

Gai had a feeling he would never be on-time again.

"Well, it is not SO formal!" Though Kakashi and Obito were quite dressed up. It was nice to see Obito looking formal without being in Hokage robes. And it was just nice to have Kakashi not in his uniform. "And besides, you knew we had lunch plans and you know you have to go to the party later! You are not allowed to spend the day reading your books!" Even if it was his birthday. "I am glad Obito rescued you from that, if that was truly how you planned to spend you day!"

"I bet he actually planned to just sleep all day." It was said with ease, and Obito sat when he was pushed to the table. He put himself in the most enclosed position at the table to give the other two the choice of the ones that were having their back to the room, and being against the wall but free to get up respectively. Essentially, he chose the seat that left him the most helpless if any conflict popped up, but where he could scan and watch for whoever had their back to the room with ease.

"So I just rescued him from forgetting to eat, someone else already crashed his plans."

"I'm not as lazy as you two make me out to be," he countered defensively as he took the seat against the wall without too much thought. "When I was woken up the sun had barely risen. I'd planned to have a lie-in, but not sleep all day."

What was with all this bullying today? Wasn't he supposed to be treated on his birthday? He folded his arms over his chest and leaned back in his seat, definitely not pouting. Not that anyone would be able to tell whether he was or wasn't when the expression was hidden under his mask..

"You make me sound like I can't do anything for myself," he said, giving Obito a wary one-eyed glare out of the corner of his gaze. "Contrary to popular belief I'm a capable adult, you know."

"Sleep or not sleep, you still planned for laziness!" There was a tsk tsk in his voice. He happily took the remaining seat, perfectly content to have his back to the room in exchange for the ease of movement. He knew if something came up--however unlikely--that Obito or Kakashi would tip him off, and then he was in an excellent position to protect them both.

"Yes, yes, my Rival. You are very capable," Gai patted his arm in playful placation as he pushed a menu at Kakashi. "But even Obito must be rescued from his own forgetfulness and forced to eat sometimes! What would you two do without me, and my pocketbook, to save you!"

"There, see?" Obito shifted, resting his knee against Kakashi's leg absently. "It wasn't about not taking care of yourself, it was about not hiding from everyone all day, in bed or not." He nudged his ankle lightly with his toes and took the menu, looking back to Gai as he did so their fingers brushed in passing.

"And I don't have to be forced. Forgetting doesn't mean I'm not actually hungry."

Oh sure. Gai would reassure Obito of his capability on a regular basis, but tease Kakashi about his. He saw how this was going. With a sulking motion he half snatched the menu, hiding his already hidden face behind it.

He knew what he wanted - he always ordered the same salty soup with some form of fish or vegetable, he wasn't exactly adventurous when it came to food - and so only glanced at the menu for a moment to check they served it, but kept it tucked in front of his face almost like his infamous book.

Kakashi was still getting used to all this touching - but then it struck him that it had always been there; touching and physical contact was always something they did, except now Kakashi was noticing it and translating the meaning and emotion behind it... and somehow, the knowledge that feeling that everything wasn't quite normal made him uneasy.

He cleared his throat. "Well, no use going on about what could have been. We're all out in the open being functioning members of society now."
