The Year End Party | Dec 31st | [Open to Konoha]

Note: Guests are expected to bring a small gift and a refreshment or dish. Food is provided by the host.~


No one can say that Mika was a bad host. She'd gone to great lengths for this party having cooked a ridiculous amount of pastries and ordering several bottles of sake to serve hot on this chilly night. The grill was on high and the meats were all carefully arranged on a table separate from the other foods. Small lanterns were strung up around the tables for ambiance. As the final touches were completed people slowly trickled up to the party. They'd notice the table of sweets first thanks to one of Mika's greatest accomplishments in baking.

A five tiered cake in alternating flavors of vanilla and chocolate! Each layer had a complimentary fruit garnishing it atop a rich ganache frosting. Probably the most decadent cake many would eat that year.

Kakashi arrived on the rooftop in a reasonably timely fashion, having marked the date on his internal calendar when Rin had informed him she'd taken the liberty of inviting him. Predictably, he didn't dare disappoint her, and had turned up wearing his typical jounin blues, apparently failing to even spare a thought for dressing formal, or even dressing down. As an afterthought - one that came when he saw the dress code for the crowd around him - before entering the party proper Kakashi untied and shed himself of his hitai-ate, safely pocketing it. There, now at least he looked a little more casual...

Armed with a bottle of fine sake as a gift (and one for himself since his taste was particularly picky) he proceeded forwards to scan and greet the faces he recognised. He was only intending to stay for a short while; long enough to be polite, to show his face and actually mingle for once, and then it would be home for him before the fireworks started.

Obito had, for once, managed to show up early, having ended up helping someone carry things to the party. It meant he wasn't late, and actually saw Kakashi show up around start time. He made hs way over with a little grin. "You came! I think we both beat Rin here."

"Oh, we did?" Kakashi said, looking around as if he didn't believe Obito... In all honesty his disbelief lay with the fact Obito was even here; he was so used to the man scrambling in at the last minute looking dishevelled and out of breath. "Wouldn't it be ironic if we turn up and she doesn't?"

Yep, this was beyond weird, but he wasn't complaining. "I know she's been busy with the hospital lately but I didn't think she'd miss a party she declared she was going to." He looked around himself though. "Weird you're here before her though, let alone me. And yeah, I know, it's unusual."

He muted a smirk behind his mask, hands instinctively going into his pockets as he regarded Obito with a contented gaze. "Mm, well. I worried what she might say if I turned up late, but it seems we've both escaped that inevitability this time.." His open eye cast a quick glance around at the other guests. "...Unless she's testing us."

He peered at him for a beat, then tipped his head back to look at the ceiling as though she was waiting just overhead to drop down on them. "You know, that's not impossible. Testing us for what though? Attendance?"

"Competence without her?" he asked with a tone of great seriousness, though his eyes were creased with the tell-tale signs of one of his small smiles.

"...We totally have competence without her." He fell into a pout. "She was gone forever, we had to have learned by now."

"Mm, I don't know..." he mused, a finger to his lip and his other hand occupied with his book as he noted a few glances flitting his way. The facade was for them, not for Obito. "We have been known to be pretty hopeless. She's the main component of our team, after all."

He waved a hand through the air as though warding that off. "She's great, you don't have to argue with me about that, but she's not the main part of the team. We get on without her!"

He was totally pouting. Yep. Even at this age, pouting.

Kakashi raised his book to hide his smirk, and nudged Obito in the ribs with a sharp elbow. "I'm teasing you."

He rubbed at the spot with a huff, but he was smiling. "I hope so or I'd have to be sad."

"Well we can't have that, hm?" There was the subtlest touch of Kakashi's hand at Obito's back, lingering. "Tonight isn't a night to be sad."

"Point. I wouldn't want to ruin the night." He flashed him a smile, nudging him back, with his whole side, so it was more of a bodycheck.

As Obito nudged him, Kakashi's arm landed on his waist, and he saw no immediate reason to move it, so it stayed there.

"Are you planning to stay here all night?" he asked, looking around at the varied faces around them.

He gave a shake of his head, leaning in against him with a sheepish laugh. "No, I actually kind of just wanted to pop in for a little while, say hi, then get out of here. I didn't mean to get here so early though."

"Yeah, you surprised everyone with that one. Though I guess it mostly seems like you're over compensating for usually being late..." he chuckled, enjoying the contact from the smaller man. "I only came for Rin's sake, but.. I'm actually enjoying the atmosphere."

"I was helping someone carry something alright? I just didn't realize the party was their end game." He scoffed and tipped his head against his shoulder to look at him more comfortably. "Not overcompensating for a thing." He gave a little shrug and relaxed. This leaning thing? He liked this.

"But I can linger for a while. How about you, you like it enough to stay a while?"

"Ne, welcome to the party Kakashi-senpai!" She popped over to the elder jounin and smiled. Looked like he'd come prepared. "You can put your gift on the table. I hope you saved room for food too. I made a lot!" Please eat some, she didn't have enough space for left overs.

He smiled at the familiar voice and moved to place his gift on the table as she'd instructed.

"I'm sure I'll find room somewhere for a bite to eat.." he muttered. Kakashi was very good at cleaning plates when he was hungry enough, and it just so happened he'd conveniently managed to skip any resemblance of a filling meal that day.

Thank the gods. Mika smiled brightly at the comment and gently ushered Kakashi to the buffet. "Well there's more than enough food! You can take some home too!"

Kakashi let himself be ushered, but gave her a side-on glance at her offer.

"That's generous of you, are you sure?" He raised one pale eyebrow into his even paler hair.

"Of course I'm sure! Please, maybe more people will eat if they see you take some!" Wouldn't he have to take his mask off... Some people were looking their way, probably having the same thought.

"If you insist--" he mused. Oh, there were plenty of people watching but Kakashi had either not noticed or was doing a very good job of acting like he hadn't noticed, and instead busied himself with picking out a few options and loading them onto a plate, ready to eat as soon as people got tired watching him.

"...." Okay even Mika wanted to look at his face, but she wasn't so uncouth as to stare openly at Kakashi. With some reluctance she left to make sure that other guests were taken care of. Soon enough everyone went back to their business too.
