Perks of the secret friend [Iruka and Itachi]

The attention Itachi gets when he finally falls ill can be overwhelming. It seems to be traveling around Konoha, so no doubt with his weak immune system and his extended stay in his home village, Itachi came down with the flu. Mother found him nearly keeling over in the process of making himself tea and demanded he lay back down in bed.

He hadn't gotten any real rest since. The household was busy. Between Mother, Sasuke, and Shisui popping in, he was always being asked if he was alright, if he needed anything, or presented with something else to try to swallow.

Dusk was only marginally better, with everyone else prepping for bed. And now the footsteps down the hall started again...

"I'm afraid I'll have to decline flowers, but perhaps...a mix of your options, otherwise." If he were being completely honest.

"I have, almost...if one could call it that." But it had been so long since he'd seen that girl, and she was just as much a mystery to him as he likely was to her. He preferred the familiarity, and the comfort.

"You know you'd actually have to say something if you moved in, right? I think your mother would come after me if you just stopped coming home one day." He paused a beat, then gave a wry smile. "To say nothing about your brother."

There's a chuckle in response. Yes, he agrees there.

"I will tell them. Sasuke will hunt me down, otherwise." He's already committed a list of offenses, moving out without notice isn't one he wants to add to his list.

"I'm stunned he's been held of this long, honestly." He brushed his fingers along his face, then nodded. "One last question. If this lingers on into the future, I know it's not unlikely that you'll be expected to marry and take up the headship. Wil this only last until then?"

Of course that was going to come up. He didn't want to hear it, hadn't even put thought into it, but it always came back to him, somehow.

"It's...something I'd rather not do." which was obvious enough, with how often he was gone, how often he threw himself into work and stayed out of grooming and clan politics.

"If there is a possibility I may absolve myself of that responsibility..."

"You can't simply ignore it and hope it goes away. You have to make it clear and discuss it. I know you've never been interested." He shook his head, pulling his hand back. "But I need to know, and so do they. I'm not very good at sharing I'm afraid."

He thought he'd made it clear enough, but he does tend to speak in odd ways. And it is true enough, this is something he needs to meet head-on, otherwise the threat will always loom. There is a nod, in affirmation.

"I would like to stay with you." Better him, than a wife that while he would never mistreat, would never fully love. Whomever that woman was, deserved better than he.

"Then I have nothing against that. Go to your mother's then, talk to your family. Next time you come home, I'd like to hear what was decided. Until then, I'll wait to find out." He gave a soft laugh.

"Even if talking isn't your strong suit."

Well, now a sound leaves him that's almost like a soft whine.

"I can return tomorrow." Not tonight, he'd like to spend tonight here, at least. He already had dinner and should've been prepping for bed.

He shifted forward cradling his face in his hands, then kissed the tip of his nose, smiling fondly at the younger man. He'd spent a lot of his life looking after this man one way or another. He'd do what he could here too, even if this time it was not really needed.

The whine was cute though. "Tomorrow then."

There's a a smile in response to the affection. He still likes it, quite a whole lot.

"Mm." he affirms, but soon pulls away for a soft yawn. It's time to turn in.

He smiled so himself... and just hoped that this wouldn't go too badly. He'd make sure to talk to Fugaku himself very soon.
