Sephiroth knew people were following him after he left. After all, he'd made quite the spectacle of himself. So he slowed his steps, and wove his way throught he allowed parts of the village for visitors... and waited to see who caught up to him first.

He hummed lowly, feline eyes staring at the boy for a long moment. "Not a good enough reason for me to actually answer. You won, why quibble?"

"I asked you a question first," Sasuke returned, eyes narrowing. Even standing in the open, there was palpable danger in those eyes. No one would attempt something so bold and stupid as attacking in the middle of a crowded shinobi village, but still ... "Why were you bidding on that girl?"

"Unless you intend to be more than merely a friend, I see absolutely nothing which entitles you to that answer." He smirked, just a little, and leaned forward a touch. "Now, are you entitled boy?"

More than merely a -- Sasuke understood the suggestion a moment late, a touch of colour flushing his cheeks, and drew himself up to his full height despite the considerable gap between it and Sephiroth's, voice as cold as he could make it:

"I'm entitled on the grounds of being a friend," he said. "And a mentor, an upperclassman, and a senior shinobi of the same village. State your intent."

Granted, 'mentor' had only lasted the one disastrous month the Academy had tried it, but still.

"Mmm no. You don't outrank my claim with any of that." He knew how he was making it sound, but this... was amusing. Greatly amusing.

His claim? Sasuke's expression darkened further, caring little for how it might look for a Konoha-nin to appear so blatantly rude to an outsider in the middle of the street.

"And what claim is that?"

"That would again fall under information you haven't proven yourself of importance enough to know." He was, admittedly... having quite a bit of fun with this.

Of enough -- Sasuke's glare sharpened into something personally offended, for all that the palpable danger in this man's movements made it clear that this was no opponent to be trifled with in a place like this.

"I'm an Uchiha," he growled, voice tense. "I am the second son of the current clan head and a Chuunin of this village. I have more than enough right to know what your interest in one of my fellow shinobi is."

He slipped forward, one step, two, and leaned, looking the Uchiha in the eye, his smirk amused even as he deliberately eased into the teen's personal bubble, obviously not in the slightest afraid of him.

"So you're an Uchiha, irrelevant. You're not of her clan, also irrelevant. And why would being a chunin entitle you to anything? Just because she is in this village now doesn't mean she always was."

Irrelevant was not something an Uchiha was accustomed to hearing about the clan, and the sudden invasion of his personal space by someone whose aura screamed threat as much as this man's did meant that the Sharingan flickered a few times into Sasuke's eyes, kept from a full activation only through force of will. Even without the doujutsu's added clarity of intent, Sasuke stood his ground, tilting his chin up in an arrogant acknowledgement of the man's height.

"She is a member of our ranks now. That's what matters." He could sense that they were beginning to draw attention as well, the tension in the air infecting the festive atmosphere around the auction.

"There are more important things." He watched him, a smirk coming to his lips. "Or are your comrades above everything in your mind?"

Above everything -- an edge of confusion stole into Sasuke's narrow-eyed glare, though his voice remained sharp when he snapped back, Obito's long and verbose lessons clear in mind: "A shinobi who doesn't take care of his comrades is trash. What is your aversion to telling me your interest?"

"Comrades are worth nothing in Kiri. I've had that lesson well learned boy." He gave a dismissive shake of his head. "But even in Konoha I had the impression that there were more important things... especially given how you listed your importance."

How he'd listed his importance. There was a loaded meaning there, and Sasuke replayed his own words before giving the man a sudden, startled once-over.

"There's no way," he blurted, even as a number of conversations he'd recently had suddenly clicked into place. "You look nothing alike."

"Yes, I'm aware." He gave him a thin smile that was cold and icy. "I look nothing like my mother's clan. Point being?"

His mother's clan ... Sasuke made a note, inasmuch as he had the attention to give to making mental notes for the future, to interrogate Adela far more about her background than he had previously. In the meantime, though, the question remained: "If your interest in her is because you're family, why does she seem to fear you?"

He blinked, then laughed. The sound was mocking, sharp, and he tilted his head, clearly and genuinely amused for all that. "Does she?"

The fact that amusement was the first response to such information was plenty of evidence toward what sort of relationship Sephiroth had or once had with Adela, Sasuke's expression veering out of confusion and right back into anger. "Don't play the fool. If you didn't know that already, you wouldn't have behaved the way you did."

"No." He tilted his head back a touch, a frown just slightly pulling at his lips, honestly confused now as the amusement faded into true bafflement. "She was shocked, but not frightened. She's aware if I was going to kill her I would have by now."

"People don't look like that when they're pleasantly surprised," Sasuke said, a certain amount of dryness in his tone. Surely someone named the 'Silver Terror' could recognize fear when he saw it, even if it was a complicated response. "She wasn't exactly acting overjoyed to see a long-lost relative."

"Of course not, last time we talked I made it clear I didn't forgive her." He tilted his head, then shook his head. "Her response was about as expected."

If this tall Mist-nin and Adela were really of a clan, there were any number of things for which he might not have forgiven. Still, Sasuke asked: "Didn't forgive her for what?"

"Leaving." The statement was simple, and by no means a secret. Or at least, it shouldn't be, in his opinion. "In another political climate she would be dead for that."

There were a number of pieces of seemingly-disparate information that were starting to stitch together now, and that answer slotted into them neatly as well. Except, if Sasuke did the math correctly, "She was just a kid when she came to Konoha. You're blaming her?"

"Who else would I blame?" He tilted his head, looking at him as though this should have been obvious. "When she left, she was the age I'd been when I'd been chunin a year. More than adequate to make her own choices."
