Summary: Shisui kept secrets. Again. You know the drill.


He'd needed to hand over the amended report for the last mission anyway, and this time he had an entire folder, chock full of detail. He'd be the first to visit Obito since the 'memo', and frankly, he's not sure what he's going to be dealing with once he steps into the Hokage's office. Especially since he'd mentioned something else. It's sort of a long walk up the stairs, too.

When he finally gets there, there's a knock, and-- "Ob-- Hokage-sama."

Yeah he'll just uhm. Wait. For a response.

He glanced to the door and then looked back to the missive he was responding to shoulders somewhat slumped and his forehead in his hand. "Come on in Shisui."

He didn't look mad. He looked miserable, and he scratched out a reply quickly so he could put it away.

Ah jeez, he felt miserable for him. Mostly because he's pretty sure he started a chain of events. Shisui has no idea that Sakura had gone and done something as well. So much for student following in the teacher's footsteps; not that either one involved the other, though.

He stepped in, padded over cautiously to the man's desk, and placed the thick packet with the folder inside. "The report. Edited. All details included." Including the bits that don't necessarily need to be filed. Those were marked. Obito could burn them once he'd memorized them, if he wanted.

He looked to him and then to the file, and gave a faint smile. "Thank you."

Good, he wasn't getting a pen stabbed in his eye--

Not yet.

Shisui doesn't leave. Instead, he's planted himself - albeit uncomfortably - just in front of Obito's desk, playing with the inside of his sleeve while he figures out the best way to pose his question...

"About the man who fits Orochimaru's description--" he begins, trailing off, checking to see if Obito visibly develops a bigger migraine at the mere mention of the topic or not.

He tilted his head, smile fading away to nothing fairly quickly. "You got confirmation."

"....I--" N-not. Really... "I wanted to know if you'd be able to tell me who it is you received that information from."

"Inferenced from a pair of overlapping missions that happened a while back." That, at least, was easily given, and he sighed. "Unfortunate though, I was really hopeful for a second there that something I wanted confirmed might be."

Shisui frowns at that. Obviously, Obito isn't really allowed to name names. But he'd been hoping that he might have been able to confirm something. And yet he doesn't let the Hokage know how he'd come across the information that followed, though it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to guess how.

"Have you come across a woman who goes by the name of Ashiko in any of those reports?" Shisui's fist clenched by his side.

Obito frowned at him immediately. "You've met her too? Damn it, how many people does she know?"

He almost shakes his head, looking down now. He's about to say no, but then--

"Who else does she know?"

He gave him a thoughtful look, then sighed. "Myself, Itachi, Sasuke, and Hinata, that I'm aware of at the moment. I'm uncertain if there might be more."

[shunshinoshishi]

He'll just-- sort of breathe a sigh of relief there. "Is she... an okay sort of person?"

Hahaha Shisui what are you doing, trying to figure out if your best friend made a good match??

"Ah... She tried to blackmail me a little when we met? Well, not exactly but she couldn't exactly hold me hostage if she wanted to get the money to pay for the damages I caused." He paused, then let out a little sigh.

"She's.. unique. Pretty, polite, and a not so bad artist."

[shunshinoshishi]

"Hm. And... Not possibly a spy for the suspect who matches Orochimaru's description?" There. He couldn't contain it any more. This time, Shisui was looking Obito square in the eye, watching for any hint of recognition. Any sort of familiarity.

Obito couldn't give that assurance, and his lips quirked humorlessly. "There might be two people in your village who think I am dead but can you assure them I am not?" His tone was pitched a touch higher, formally intoned. "No, there... is no clear assurance."

He didn't think so. "Hm." The look on his face made it pretty obvious he had doubts about his source which, obviously, had to be none other than the one person who had been scouting the area for years.

Shisui stood there clenching his fist by his side, still trying to figure out how to ask nicely--

"What's on your mind Shisui? It's obviously not just this."

It takes him a good two minutes to get over the hesitation and formulate words loud enough to convey his thoughts-- which, admittedly, were all over the place right now.

"Let me go to Oto--" He bit his lip. Perhaps the account would be different. Perhaps not. "Either in place of-- of..." He grit his teeth, voice catching in his throat before he could speak again. Whatever he said next was almost a squeak. "--Itachi. Or with him, but without his knowing." Perhaps something was off if Shisui was requesting to be a fresh pair of eyes and ears and perception in general... over Itachi.

"He's not being sent that direction anymore, actually. It's too risky for him now." It was a simple, soft statement. "That particular long term assignment ended."

[shunshinoshishi]

"That's not good enough!" Whoops, didn't mean to raise his voice there. Fists clenched again, Shisui has to check himself.

Somehow he was convinced-- as was evidenced in the way he hissed: "She's our link to Orochimaru, I know it."

He was watching him though, intent. "No, she isn't. I'm sorry Shisui, but if it's Orochimaru she serves, she's useless to us. You'd do better to find someone else from Rice for that."

[shunshinoshishi]

"What. Has she got you hooked too?!" His eyes flash red for a moment that goes unchecked, before he closes them-- screws them shut. When they open again, they're black once more.

"Sorry." Somehow-- he wasn't going to stop there. For now, however, he was just going to bow, and wait to be dismissed. Or something.

"Sit." He waved Shisui down as he clearly got the wrong message. "I've known Ashiko for years now. We've corresponded by writing for a long time, and do you know her favorite thing to talk about? Her Master, her precious Donna-sama, the man who can do no wrong in the world because he is her reason for existing. She would never speak a word against him Shisui. She'd be useless if Orochimaru is that man, because even torture wouldn't rip secrets out of someone who is devoted like that."

He had half a mind to refuse the order to sit, but ended up awkwardly seating himself in the nearest chair anyway.

But she was different. She was different with Itachi, and Shisui could only grip the knees of his pants with every passing word that fell from the Hokage's mouth. She was different with Itac-- Was he seriously considering using his best friend like that? But... it would put Itachi's mind at ease, wouldn't it? If he could lift some of that guilt off Itachi's shoulders, if he could just help him stop beating himself up about what he'd failed to do--

But Orochimaru had always had an interest in Itachi.

...But would he put him through that again?! What kind of friend was he... What if he could just go out there and finish her off? No, that-- that would only provoke the enemy and put Konoha in danger.

What if he could use kotoamatsukami from a distance? It would be so subtle that no one would know. And if Orochimaru did catch wind, he couldn't undo the genjutsu by himself. --

But Shisui doesn't speak a word, silent as ever although visibly distressed by the decision. Just waiting for a dismissal. For now.

Obito was watching him though. "You're thinking. Think aloud." And there was the weight of authority that made it clear how serious he was taking this.
