Summary: Shisui kept secrets. Again. You know the drill.


He'd needed to hand over the amended report for the last mission anyway, and this time he had an entire folder, chock full of detail. He'd be the first to visit Obito since the 'memo', and frankly, he's not sure what he's going to be dealing with once he steps into the Hokage's office. Especially since he'd mentioned something else. It's sort of a long walk up the stairs, too.

When he finally gets there, there's a knock, and-- "Ob-- Hokage-sama."

Yeah he'll just uhm. Wait. For a response.

Much as he wanted to address the first comment, it wasn't the most important one, not just now, and he just gave a frustrated shake of his head because the whole point of his statement was not that he was sloughing blame but that Shisui himself wasn't blameless.

"Yes, Shisui, I know exactly how many people want me to fail. It's a smaller number than it used to be." He was studying him though, his restlessness, and he felt himself calm, really calm, not just be swamped with exhaustion. He folded up the damp tissue and set it down, composure recovered. "The first plan you offered me was basically dismissing Intel I had just handed you, it didn't exactly give me an opening to progress that part of the conversation in the manner you'd hoped for I think, and then you followed it up with a plan to use someone as bait."

He just stared at him for a moment, letting him take it in before he continued. "I can't send you out yet. Not when you're missing so much information. You're high enough rank..." He studied him for a moment more, then pulled over a paper and started to write. "We'll fix that first."

That he wasn't himself blameless might have been so, but it had always been 'but you too!', and never any acknowledgement that it had been the other way round as well. There was always a 'but' that followed, and that pissed him off.

But Shisui stopped to think back to everything Obito had said, and realized how somewhere they had gone and mistook the 'he' in the conversation for someone else. He sighed. "The only person I had suggested to use as bait was her." He eyed him then. Had he ever said anything about sending Itachi out there? No. It made sense then why Obito had brought up Itachi teaching Ashiko to swim when Shisui had been talking about Orochimaru killing him or Ashiko first to getaway from kotoamatsukami.

He huffed a sigh again. "Yeah I never ever said to use Itachi. And as for intel." He shrugged. "It's why I wanted to know who the source was, because if it..." Shisui waved a hand dismissively. He wasn't going to throw Itachi under the bus, really. "Nevermind."

The paper, however, had Shisui frowning. "...Fix what?"

He noted that Shisui didn't know Ashiko after all with that last bit, glancing to him with his words before turning his gaze back to the paper and continuing to write. "Your lack of awareness on the severity of the intel situation."

Which was unfortunately terrible. He'd been keeping on top of all rumors coming in, making sure that they didn't add up to the horrifying picture they were. He didn't want people to panic, or start actively looking for fights. Konoha didn't need that. The information lacks inside the village had been too much in the face of misinformation coming in in droves though, otherwise he would have handled it all much more quietly.

He rolled his eyes at that. "What are you writing." He'd decided he wasn't coming forth with anything unless Obito specifically asked him of it in the future. And somehow, he was just a little nervous about what he was writing...

He crossed a last line and then flipped it around, offering it to him. "For the next week you have full access to the current intel files and reports, current going back to the start of the year. Have fun and tell me what you come out with."

It was, basically, something someone outside that department almost never got, and never for so long.

Shisui reached out for the piece of paper. It took a lot for him not to do a double-take upon reading it's contents, really. He might have sort of... done so, actually. After Obito spoke. And after he'd re-read what was on it.

Except there's something off. It doesn't feel right. Not when it's coming out of Obito. He's doing nothing but frowning at the paper.

"Why?"

This can't be right.

"Because I know you won't disappoint me." He settled back in his chair, feeling more at ease. Finally another pair of eyes would be on this and Shisui might catch some of the issues that had been plaguing him where he couldn't get a grip on them. He knew he most definitely was not the smartest shinobi in the village, but Shisui had a few up on him, so he'd take it. "I trust you."

He nodded to the door. "If you're still in a hurry to go?"

"That's bullshit. I always make you cry." He didn't really know what to do with the 'I trust you' comment. He might have flinched. "Thank you I guess."

But he looks to the door, and then back at Obito. "No, but you're in a hurry to see me off." The paper gets crumpled in his grip even as he awkwardly makes to move away.

"Yeah, you do. You should be flattered." He leaned his chin in his hand, watching him. "Nothing to thank me for though Shisui."

"Excuse me?" Why would you say that to anyone, Obito?! Shisui wasn't proud of walking in and making him cry every time. It made him feel like shit, if anything. The knee-jerk reaction that he was doing something wrong, that he was being seen as just another bully.

"No. I'm thanking you. It's been almost thirty years."

"I'm sure you've thanked me at some point." He blinked at him, bewildered, then shook his head. "I was serious though. There's not a lot of people I actually care enough about that they can make me cry."

"Not for this kind of thing, no." But the next bit has him wearing this expression of utter confusion because... w h a t? There's a long silence that follows, rife with confusion, obviously, while Shisui just. Stares the Hokage in the face.

"...Huh?" No, that-- was not very explanatory. "You're telling me now that you care? And all this time I felt like a bully...?" It was never just this-- clearly it stemmed from way back when.

But, more importantly. Obito. You waited thirty years to tell him you cared?!

"It's... not like it's a secret. I don't cry when people hurt me physically you know. Or tease me. Not since I was little. You never noticed?" He blinked at him. Oblivious much Shisui?

"It's not a secret, but that just means I've been hurting you on a much deeper level. How am I supposed to feel good or special about that?!" No, he wasn't oblivious. Just mortified.

You just didn't... feel good about something like that--

"Don't be stupid. It just means I don't feel the need to restrain myself. Kakashi makes me cry all the time." He shrugged, then stilled, looking thoughtful. "Though not as much as he used to, it bothers him more since the squishing."

"Well just--" Shisui looked away, huffy, trying not to pout. "Try and not do that because it makes me feel like I kicked a puppy and that's cheating on so many levels."

His gaze lowers when Obito mentions the accident, and all Shisui does is nod. He could understand why Kakashi would be bothered more since then.

"I can't actually... help it. I've learned to control my emotions to an extent but." He let out a rough sigh. "Some people still hit harder."
