[Closed] Enough cousin

Notes: Obito finally decides to give this another try, hunting down Shisui.

He'd noticed the way Shisui was on edge at the auction. Just because he'd bowed quickly out of the bidding, after all, didn't mean he hadn't been alert to how his shinobi had been taking those bidding on them. Still, him being that on edge? Not so good, and he'd kept out of it, knowing that he wouldn't be able to help the situation if he waded in. He'd never been... as close to Shisui as the younger cousins.

Hazards of being near his age when he wasn't measuring up.

Still, that didn't mean he didn't care. On the contrary, he probably cared more than he should, but that was fine too, and he finally caught up to Shisui when the man was outside and not obviously training. It was evening. "So. Shisui."

Well if-- Obito was a little less pushy, he wouldn't be driving Shisui away into his shell? Sometimes his slightly older cousin reminded him of an insistent puppy. If only Obito yipped instead of talked.

...Perhaps it just boiled down to not having sent as much time with Obito in his younger years.

Shisui had been perched up on one of the rooftops, looking out into the sunset, lost in thought. He'd be lying if he denied Obito's observations to be true, that something was off. But now-- Obito's presence, and the way he worded things was enough to make him tense and stiffen up, expecting a torrent of personal questions curve-balling their way towards him.

"Obito." Sigh. "Did you want me to help you file papers or something?" He was making it a point not to make eye contact...

He leaned against a tree, watching him and feeling his lips twist with a lack of humor. Figures. He'd barely said a word and Shisui already wanted him to go away. "If that was the idea I would've sent someone to get you instead of coming all the way out here. When it's about to get dark, and most people are having dinner or breakfast."

"Dinner or breakfast. It's not that late. The decision shouldn't be too hard."

Shisui shrugs, hunching over as his elbows press into his knees. He doesn't even remember to check the tone of his voice. He doesn't ask Obito why he's sought him ought, aware that the reason would come out either way. Instead, he resorts to mulling quietly in the silence like he'd been doing before the Hokage had found him.

An old shadow seemed to color his expression, one that twisted him up inside with guilt. There were things he'd gone and done that just-- ...Obito needed to know.

Somebody needed to answer for the body count that didn't match up from that last mission.

"Breakfast for night shift, dinner for day shift." It was a murmur, a reminder not everyone was on the same schedule. "Is that really the most important thing at the moment?"

He shrugs once more. He-- didn't care. Unless Obito wanted him to help cook for someone or something, he didn't see why it applied to him at all. Not right now, at least. Out of the blue.

"...Why don't you tell me what's important then, since you came all the way out here to talk to me."

"How should I know?" He looked over at him, then gave him a faint smile, settling himself off to Shisui's side but outside arm's reach. "I had to come all the way out here to get you to talk to me."

"I don't care about breakfast or dinner, if that's what you're asking." Clearly it wasn't, but he-- Oh no. Obito had settled closer. This was going to be a long night.

...Except he figures that he might actually have something to tell him. It was required of him after all: to report every pertinent detail to the Hokage.

"It's not like you tried sending me a message or anything. I might have come over to see you." If Obito wanted him to talk, then Shisui was going to go around in circles and talk about everything but the elephant in the room.

"Yeah, and you'd tell me anything you felt I needed to know and nothing further." He snorted and leaned his elbows on his knees, looking forward. "I know how you work."

I know how you work.

Shisui glances off to the side, catching Obito from the corner of his eye. He was pretty sure Obito wasn't talking specifically about the thing that was on his mind at the moment, but guilt made him twitch just ever so slightly.

"So. Coming out here. What difference does it make if it's still the way I work?"

No, you don't know everything, and I'm too fucking ashamed to tell you--

"One of us has to make the effort." He turned his head, catching the glance and just... waiting. He'd put him on his better side.

He said nothing to that, choosing instead to hang his head in a mixture of guilt and shame. And perhaps a whole lot of other things he didn't want anybody finding out. He would have usually confided in Itachi, but even there things were rather strained.

There was nothing but silence between them then, and Shisui swung his legs to and fro over the edge of the roof he was perched on.

It would be a whole lot easier if Obito specified where they wanted to start. Then again, there was hardly any guarantee that Shisui would divulge any information at all.

"Someday, I hope you learn to trust me." His voice was quiet, almost a sigh, after a long few minutes of silence. Then he looked away. "I suppose even making Hokage didn't overcome the distrust mm? You don't need to carry everything, and you don't need to hide things from me. I know I'm not our chosen confidant... but I'm not a stranger you know. Or an enemy."

"It's not that I don't trust you." Defensive. But he doesn't know what to follow that up with. It wasn't because he didn't trust Obito; it was just... He was not Itachi. It was different.

With Itachi he didn't even need to say a word. Itachi understood him, and it was the same the other way around.

"You don't come to me with your problems. Why am I obliged to do so instead?"

"You never wanted to hear my problems Shisui." He snorted softly, not looking at him this time when he spoke. "We both know it, and I'm not stupid. You could at least not actively hide things from me though. Mm? I can tell when something's off."

"I don't go about asking anyone if they have problems." The truth of the matter was that he rarely ever asked Itachi about anything either. It just-- happened all the time. "Not even Itachi," he clarifies here, aware that somehow Obito had formed an opinion about Shisui as being that somebody who probably didn't really like him... Which wasn't in the least true. He'd always been nice to him; he didn't know where all this was coming from. Until now, obviously. But Shisui wasn't the type to bear his soul to just anyone.

But-- actively hide things? Shisui shoots him a glance then, a flash of alarm in his expression that he quickly subdues. "How much do you know?"

At least, the way he'd worded that question-- it seemed as though Shisui might be willing to get it off his chest.

"I know the difference when you're hiding things and when you're not." He tilted his head, looking over, tone light. "Don't be so shocked. Just because I've never called you on it doesn't mean I don't notice, seriously. I'm not Hokage just because sensei likes me. You changed your patterns."

So, either Obito did know or didn't. He wasn't letting on what he was on about, precisely.

"What the hell do you want to know?" He spat out. It was an honest question, too. There was so much going on, he didn't know where to begin.

"Pick something you're hiding from me, and tell me." He dropped the levity and huffed a breath, almost a laugh, though it was humorless. "Though if the list is long enough you've got one I guess I can see where the trouble is."

He couldn't pick. Being forced to say anything at all was an added stressor, and Shisui was beginning to try and clam up. He even scouted the surroundings, looking for a way out.

"And that would be?" Just narrow down his list for him, please.

"Start with the latest one then." He looked sideways, completely serious. "Better?"

He thought about that, then shook his head. They were all interconnected it was hard to separate one from the other. Instead, the question makes him go over everything step by step, and Shisui finally picks a place to start.

...Except now he's letting out a shaky exhale, not too sure what kind of consequences Obito would dole out on him once he knew how badly he'd messed up.

"I uh-- I." Swallow; mouth suddenly dry. "The report on my latest mission with Ami and Adela may be missing a few details."

He wasn't even going to bother lifting his head. He was beyond ashamed of himself.

He straightened, sharpening his focus as he shifted so that he could look at him straight on, attentive and focused. He didn't say anything, his Hokage senses pinged, and he waited.

The silence was awful, and Shisui did nothing to lift it. Not at first at least.

He glances off to the side again, eyeing the Hokage before looking off into the distance. "You didn't see anything off on the autopsies of the perpetrators?" They had to have sent them over to Obito by now, hadn't they? They'd taken Ami; it was Konoha's business to know, wasn't it?

"They never released them." It was a murmur, barely loud enough to catch. "I'd mentioned that the countries around Konoha were being difficult some months back, hadn't I? It extended to this."

That worried him. Had they caught on? Shit, what had he gone and gotten everybody else into?!

Shisui clasps his hands, fingers pressing into knuckles. They were white by the time he finally spoke up: "I did it." I killed them. I killed a bunch of civilians.

His sharingan had turned itself on.
