Notes: Obito finally decides to give this another try, hunting down Shisui.

He'd noticed the way Shisui was on edge at the auction. Just because he'd bowed quickly out of the bidding, after all, didn't mean he hadn't been alert to how his shinobi had been taking those bidding on them. Still, him being that on edge? Not so good, and he'd kept out of it, knowing that he wouldn't be able to help the situation if he waded in. He'd never been... as close to Shisui as the younger cousins.

Hazards of being near his age when he wasn't measuring up.

Still, that didn't mean he didn't care. On the contrary, he probably cared more than he should, but that was fine too, and he finally caught up to Shisui when the man was outside and not obviously training. It was evening. "So. Shisui."

A shaky breath. If they hadn't sent in any autopsy reports since then, then he was going to have to let Obito know things before he was surprised with the information by a third party.

"I had to," he blurted. "They were armed; it was the only way." It almost sounded as if he were having a conversation with himself, out aloud for once. He seemed as though he was trying to convince himself that that was the truth. "There was no other way. I had to."

And, most importantly-- "They took Ami."

Tomoe spinning. That last bit was hushed, murmured into the breeze that picked up just then.

"...Adela doesn't know."

Worst of all, I liked it.

"Why did they take her?" It was said in the same low steady tone, waiting for more of the details he hadn't been given as clearly this was... quite important. He should have been told sooner.

A shadow crosses Shisui's face in that moment, his expression turning into something of a grimace. "I told you. It was a human trafficking ring. They were selling people off. Men, women, children." Just the pretty ones.

He goes silent again, anger bubbling underneath until he audibly grinds his teeth in his jaw. "They were going to sell my Ami and god knows what they would have done to her!"

Whoops. He slipped there with the 'my' in front of Ami.

Except even pretending to claim her as his own didn't help. He felt like such a failure every time he looked back on things. Even now-- Even now she probably hated him.

He hunches over some more, lips pursed together as he focuses on nothing in particular.

"So you killed them." He leaned over, tapping the tiles beside his knee, deliberately refocusing the other Uchiha. He'd wanted to be sure there were no more list details.

"Good."

What? Good? Had he heard him right?

Shisui turns to look up at him, finally, obviously confused. "...What?"

He met his gaze, totally calm, totally at ease. "I said good."

He had to stare. For a good two minutes before finally looking away, shaking his head. It was a relief to know that Obito wasn't going to kill him yet-- But while he shared that sentiment, he still--

"It wasn't clean." He went on, focusing on no one in particular as he stared off into the distance again. Shisui was usually efficient, killing silently, killing before his victims knew they were even dead. His methods were usually so clean, so efficient, so quick that it was likely his victims barely felt anything at all. "I took my time." His skin crawled at the memory; not at the things he had done, but at the feelings he had reveled in. "Gutted them halfway, then let them bleed out--" Gesturing to his neck. "C-carved out the tongues so they didn't talk, made them piss blood--"

He put his head in his hands. "I fucking liked it." Everything just... dwindled into a hoarse whisper.

"They tried to take your student." He tilted his head a little, then moved his hand from the tiles to his knee, a light touch. "I don't see a problem."

Perhaps he was coming off too calm, but smiling to reassure him here didn't seem appropriate. Then again, did Shisui forget that Obito had students too? Ones he'd had even longer to get attached to than Shisui had his?

"It's... not something I want her to find out," he admits, twitching a little at the touch. Shisui doesn't shove Obito away though, even if it's-- rather awkward.

Shisui hasn't forgotten, but he also knows how it literally isn't the right thing to do. It wasn't the Konoha code they were used to following. It went against their principles as Konoha shinobi. It would have been expected of him had he been from Suna instead.

His face sinks deeper into his hands. "I doubt she'd care anyway."

Oh hey, here comes the rest of it, bit by bit.

"Of course she'd care. Though I suspect how she'd care would be in question?" He leaned into the arm still braced on his knee. "Why would you say she wouldn't?"

Shisui pulled his leg away then, bringing his knee up to hug it instead. "Because she thinks I'm a lousy teacher who'd much rather spend time with my other student than with her. I've been away a whole month in the two that she was assigned to me as my student, and then I let her get kidnapped on the one B-ranked mission I take her out to. I know she prefers Itachi over me, I just--"

I've been letting her down.

And whoops. Did he just mention another student? A-ah--

"First, this indicates that you should have taken on a team, not an apprentice. Second, if you already had an apprentice, who is it and why didn't you mention it so that you could get the proper time afforded for in village training? Third, neither of those situations was your fault, and that month long mission was intended to be much shorter. Fourth, you should actually talk to the girl instead of presuming her feelings about you, she's a young girl, and young girls make comments."

He paused, then sighed. "So... that brings us up to the mission, right?"

"I don't have the time, Obito. You know that."

He's glaring at you for that comment about the month-long mission taking longer than it did. "Are you trying to tell me I'm inefficient?" He leaves out the rest for later, aware that he'd slipped that bit of information about said 'other student'. It was all very unofficial, though.

"You have the time. If you communicate you need it." It was a statement more than anything, and he met the glare with an easy stare. "I'm telling you that misinformation led to mis-assignment to someone who was supposed to stay in the village more than he ended up doing."

"To train a team? Yeah right. Until you get this misinformation bullshit sorted out, I'm not taking up a team of Genin and letting them down like I did Ami. Besides, she'd be up in arms about me paying attention to someone else besides her. And if everybody else is convinced I'm a shit teacher, maybe she needs someone better." By everyone else, he meant Itachi. "And I don't know what's gotten into that girl to start telling me things like I ought to watch out or people would think I was carrying on a different sort of relationship with my student--" Mumbling now: "Teenagers."

"Ah, so she likes you." It was a statement of understanding, and he settled back, not leaning forward as much. "Maybe not crush level like, but conscious that her attention to you could make people think it was?"

Obito no.

Shisui went red at that casual statement. "Oi!" And then made a face. "That's awful." He considered her more like his little cub. If he was a Papa Bear, that is.

He was, however, rather relieved that Obito wasn't exactly pushing about his other student.

Shisui had nothing to worry about, Obito would get back to that. "So why do you think she likes Itachi better? There was snipping about that at the auction... have you two still not talked?"

"We have." A lie. A blatant lie. He hasn't spoken to Itachi since. Not without that lingering tension still simmering between them.

And as for why he thought Ami preferred Itachi over himself-- "He's had more time to spend with her in the month I was away. Without a doubt, I'm sure he was a wonderful teacher." He didn't doubt Itachi's abilities one bit.

Shisui waves his hand dismissively though. "Things are fine. I need to get back home now." He was already making to get up and leave, not really wanting their conversation to drag into the issue with Ashiko, or Sakura.

"And... I don't believe you." He gave him a bright smile, but there was a hard edge. "So, about your other student. Name." It wasn't a request.

And he sent him a pout-frown.

He didn't give away the name right away, however: "It's nothing official, really."

"Name, then you can run away." He dropped the smile but the stare didn't waver.

Now Shisui wasn't even sure if Obito would actually let him run away.

"I'll tell you tomorrow."

Goodbye, turning around-- On his way home, whoops! Left foot, right foot--

"I don't believe that either. Name. Shisui." He didn't move, but the tone was positively steely.

Looking up. "Stars. The stars are not in position for this revelation. Tomorrow night!"
