The Hangover: Part II

Where: Neji's Apartment
When: Sept. 4, afternoon.
Notes: Closed to Neji and Gai.

Gai had some VERY IMPORTANT NEWS to tell his students. Lee had been thrilled for him, of course, and Tenten had accepted in her own stunned way, but now he was off to tell Neji all about the exciting turn of events in his love life. He could hardly contain himself, he was so excited. If Kakashi didn't want to keep it mostly secret, and if secrecy wasn't kind of important also because of Obito's position, Gai would have been shouting to the world. As it was, he would shout it to his students.

He was not prone to discussing his love life at all, least of all with his students, but this was just so momentous--and such a long time coming--that it seemed necessary to share. Although, now that he was standing in front of Neji's door, he was beginning to wonder if maybe it might make things awkward for Neji as an ANBU. But then again, it would give him fair warning as well, and it was important if he was going to guard the Hokage again at some future date that he understand the Hokage's significant relationships. Right? Right. One had to study a mission target, whether that was your safeguard target or your enemy. Plus, Gai just wanted him to know. It was important to share these things with the people you were close to; it was a bonding experience.

With that justification, Gai excitedly gave the door three quick knocks.

He was never drinking again.

It was a small miracle he'd somehow made it back to his apartment the night before, but any sense of gratitude he felt for that simple fact was quickly swept away in the wake of his utter misery. The first time he'd opened his eyes, Neji promptly shut them, because it was bright and he took great offense to the sun's morning rays. Or afternoon rays, whatever. That was hours ago, and he still wasn't feeling particularly charitable, had no plans to move- not until the godforsaken sun moved to the other side of the building.

But the knocks at his front door jerked him to alertness, and Neji immediately hated whomever it was on the other side. He narrowed it down to Izumo, Gai, or perhaps Yamato. But the door to his apartment was unreasonably far- all the way down the hall in fact. There was absolutely zero chance he was getting up to get it- and if he did, it would only be to hiss at the offending shinobi as angrily as he could while not aggravating his headache any further. But even that sounded like too much effort.

Neji groaned into the pillow and willed his visitor to leave, because he was in no shape to entertain company. If it was important, they wouldn't bother knocking. If not, it could probably wait.

Gai.

Neji groaned again, because the last thing he wanted was his mentor's booming voice filling his small apartment while he was hungover. Tiredly, he wondered about the lesser of the two evils. Get up to answer the door and possibly convince the man to keep his voice at a semi-reasonable level, or make him let himself in and deal with his voice reverberating down the hall. That man was far too determined to give up just because of a closed door.

Grudgingly, Neji dragged himself out of bed and padded down the hall, wrenched open the door without the slightest attempt at appearing presentable.

"Quiet," he hissed, stepping aside and gesturing Gai in with a rushed sweep of his arm. "Or I'll make sure you can't speak for a few hours."

He wouldn't, mostly because he was in no shape to do so. And using that many words kind of hurt. In contrary to his apparent temper, Neji closed the door as softly as possible behind his uninvited guest and grumbled about the light coming into the kitchenette as he fished for some water.
