Peter hadn't intended to be away for his birthday, and just hoped that if anyone had remembered, that they weren't going to be upset with him for not being home on the day itself. He'd been headed that way before he got the lead after all, the day before, and thus it was that early on the 15th of May, on his 18th birthday, Peter took a straight path East instead of north, hopping the seal to somewhere else not Rice on a quest for an obscure, and honestly, not very important scroll. Still, it was a scroll he'd been looking for and that was honestly what mattered here.

"I promise it's just you! I mean! I'm usually really polite!" He took a deep breath and gave her an apologetic smile, hurrying to keep up. "I just. I'm so sorry."

[sensethis]

"Usually doesn't help if you aren't doing it." She sighs and crosses her arms over her chest, shooting him a half glare before turning her gaze back to what was ahead of her. "You better be."

"I can't help that I don't feel right being formal with you. I'm formal with everyone." It was a grumble and he looked away from her.

[sensethis]

"What makes me so special, in that case?" She'd really like to know before she either purposely loses him or socks him one. Either of which has equal chances of happening at this point.

[lostmarauder]

"I guess you remind me of someone." He kicked a rock, irritated with himself.

[sensethis]

Oh? She relaxes slightly and tilts her head curious. "She must have been something to tolerate you telling her she looks stupid with glasses."

[lostmarauder]

"She didn't wear glasses!" He paused, looking back to her, frowning. "But she looked a lot like you. I heard she died."

[sensethis]

"That sucks." She doesn't press. Well she wouldn't press normally. "How much like me?" Because she hadn't always worn glasses and she sort of nearly did die around that same time frame. And he's hitting a little too close to home right now even for her. Though the slight rattle to her nerves is covered by a rather heavy appearance of feigned of flattery and a raised eyebrow as she comes to a stop just beyond the far edge of the village proper. Spill blondie.

He stared at her, then frowned, coming to a halt too. The familiarity of this was just more intense and disorienting. "...A lot"

[sensethis]

"Okay then. You know you're doing that whole vague thing again and I'd really like to know just who I'm so reminiscent of."

[lostmarauder]

He hitched up a shoulder, shifting on his feet. "Her name was Karin."

[sensethis]

She stiffens, going completely still. Breathe Karin he isn't necessarily talking about you. There were plenty of blonde and blue eyed boys in the world. Her cousin and uncle were proof enough of that. She releases a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "What happened to her? I mean besides the obvious."

"I never got the details." He tensed as she did, feeling a bit wary.

[sensethis]

"Probably for the best. Your parents probably wouldn't want to tell you if she died in a fire or something. They probably wouldn't have wanted to scare you." She's just going to play that off like she hadn't just froze in place. And it helped if she turned that near miss into a joke.

"Of course they would. They considered her a bad influence." He was speaking carefully, not looking away.

[sensethis]

She scoffs, "How bad could she have been? She didn't talk you into doing something incredibly stupid like steal something did she?"

[lostmarauder]

"She wasn't from a civilian family." It was a mumble and he shifted on his feet.

[sensethis]

"That's a stupid reason to not like a child." It's harsher than she intends initially. He just kept saying things that echoed her childhood a little too closely.

"So what's your name since we sharing?"

[lostmarauder]

He gave her a helpless shrug because he'd never liked that either after all. "Peter."

[sensethis]

She laughs before catching herself and shakes her head. It wasn't at him. "I knew a boy named Peter when I was little. Was never really sure what happened to him after- ...after Grass took me in as a ward." she finishes lamely, the words a rush as if she's embarrassed.

Peter wasn't actually as stupid as his skills might paint him to be, and he looked back to her, studying her intently then, biting his lower lip. "You're Karin aren't you?"

[sensethis]

She nods, a quick dip of her chin accompanied by a shrug. "Yeah it's, uh, been awhile." She doesn't usually find herself at such a loss for words, but then she isn't reunited with a childhood friend everyday. "So how are your parents?"

[lostmarauder]

"No idea." It was a murmur, and he flushed, looking down and away before looking sideways at her. "I haven't seen them for years, not since I left."

[sensethis]

"Oh. How have you been? Miss me?" She nudges him a little her way of saying it's okay. She's got that bratty grin on her face that he should remember from when they were kids.

"I got to be a shinobi." He huffed a breath and looked sideways at her with a wry little smile. "But.. yeah. I'm glad you're not dead."
