Gai had been working on his resolutions, first in anticipation of what to write to his father on the lantern, and now in preparation of the New Year. Usually, most of Gai's resolutions were focused solely on himself, and nearly all of them were things he had control over the outcome, but sometimes...sometimes they were things he required another person for.

☐ Be a better boyfriend.

To be honest, he wasn't sure how to be that, but he was definitely going to try. His resolution list in his notebook at home included self-suggestions on how to improve:

      • invest in more time with them
      • behave do not intrude on matters that do not concern you (they do not all concern you)
      • be more affectionate
      • say 'I love you' more often
      • hold their hands
      • strive to learn something new about them each time you see them
      • more challenges
      • be nicer to Yamato their friends
      • take them out on dates/excusions/lunches
      • renew kissing practice?

And it was that last one that had Gai here now, because while the ball was in his court for most of the others, kissing practice was something Obito had to want again too. They hadn't exactly done much of that since becoming boyfriends and he felt a little selfish wanting that back so badly. After all, kissing was not all he saw in Obito and he did not want his friend to think that was all he was here for, but...

He missed it. Kissing Obito had been like challenging Kakashi: a perfect excuse for being together. And kissing Obito had been really, really wonderful, too. He made Gai's heart flutter with excitement, took his breath away--

Surely Obito, who liked kissing people and flirting with people and all of that, would want kissing practice back, right? That was what he hoped, at least.

Gai knocked on the door to Obito's office and then peeked in. "Hokage-sama! When you are not busy, may I speak to you about something personal?"

The contact was what he had craved most, and Gai could appreciate Obito's focus enough to let him work without further interruption (even if Gai did sometimes want to lean over and kiss him, or smell his hair, or touch him). He tried not to be too nosy about the paperwork itself either--this was Hokage business, after all--but he really enjoyed watching Obito at work, admiring the concentration, the diligence, and yes, the passion. It was an immense privilege to watch him work.

It took him nearly an hour to finish everything to a place where he felt comfortable leaving it, and with a last signature, he set the paper on the pile to go out and sat back, running his fingers along the outside of Gai's thigh. "All done."

It took a lot of patience to wait, but Obito's company (in any facet) was always worth it and Gai wasn't as stir-crazy or antsy when he had someone to sit with, even everything considered. But that simple touch undid any calm patience he had going for him. "With this! Not with me."

"With the office, for the moment." He trailed his fingers back, then over his knee before lifting his hand. "Where to Gai, mm?"

He shivered and though he was clearly disappointed at the break in contact, he reminded himself it was only temporary. "Anywhere you would like to go. You are of course always welcome at my apartment ...and I am always open to suggestions."

"Yours, mine, pick one." He got up from the chair, resting a hand on each of Gai's knees and meeting his eyes.

That look was making parts of him melt, while making other parts start to take the opposite route. His knees subconsciously parted subtly and Gai leaned forward. "Yours."

He licked his lips, breathless all the sudden. His tone was a touch lower down the register. "Was that a declaration of intent or picking where we're going?"

His gaze followed Obito's tongue and remained on his lips afterwards, intently considering them. He hooked a pair of fingers in front of Obito's waistband and pulled him closer. "Yes."

He shivered at that answer, and drew in a sharp breath. "Oh." He leaned in, brushing a kiss over Gai's cheek, just to the side of his lips. "So we should get going mm?"

How that kiss was supposed to make him want to do anything but pull Obito closer and kiss him and never leave this room, Gai wasn't sure. But they should go somewhere more private, yes. He slid off the desk and wrapped his arms around Obito's waist. "I suppose."

He ran his fingers up as Gai stood, then stepped back when the taller man wrapped his arms around him. "I'd say race you, but you'd beat me there."

"Of course I would!" A fact he was very proud of, almost enough to not be too distracted by that touch. "I could carry you!"

He blinked, then tilted his head, regarding him in surprise. "You want to?"

"I have done so before! I see no shame in it!" He loosened his hold on Obito's waist. "How would you like to be carried? Bridal? Piggy-back? I believe I threw you over my shoulder last time--we could do that again!"

"Hey, no." He leaned in, smirking. "Not unless you want me doing my level best to make you stumble." He backed up a step. "Did you favor that one?"

"Ha! I would like to see you try!" Gai hadn't expected Obito to make a retreat! He stepped forward to follow, once again closing the space between them. "And maybe. I favor any position that allows me to touch you." He didn't mean it like that. He was talking about carrying positions. It never even occurred to Gai how it might otherwise sound.

"All three of them let you touch me." He looked at him through his lashes, then took another step, to the side of his chair.

"So I favor all three." Gai took a step after him, leaning in close enough to kiss him without doing so.

He breathed out, tipping his head up, but not making contact either, then another step back. "So it doesn't matter what you pick, right?"

He could feel Obito's breath against his lips and cheek. "As long as I can touch you, and as long as you like it." Gai took a step forward and then another one, perhaps too close that he would be forcing Obito back. "Do you have something in mind?"

He shivered and straightened his back, taking another step away, then a second, circling sideways so he didn't end up against the wall. "Maybe once we get there."

Gai turned to follow as Obito circled, unwilling to let him escape. It was a bit like a chase, a different kind of challenge or dance than with Kakashi, and he enjoyed the pursuit. He grinned and leaned down to murmur against Obito's ear. "Do not be impatient, Obito. I shall get you there."

Was he supposed to enjoy the implications as much as he was when Gai did that? The man felt like he was taking up all the space around him and it was good. He gave a breathless laugh.

"And what made you think I doubted that?"

He held still for a moment, then slipped around him, staying close this time instead of moving away, but none the less made Gai have to put in a little effort if he wanted to touch him from there, his fingers not quite brushing the back of Gai's shoulder.

Considering the thrill Gai got out of making those implications, he was welcome to enjoy them. "Nothing. I just wanted you to know."

Apparently this was a chase, because there Obito was ducking out of reach again and Gai felt a giddy excitement and a playful frustration shiver through him at the touch and, as he turned, his hands reached immediately for Obito's waist. He didn't wait for Obito to dance away again, instead bending down and hefting Obito up over his shoulder.

"Ha!"
